Sandra Fraser Mayberry Hunter

It is with great sadness that the family of Sandra Hunter announces her passing, after a long journey with Alzheimer’s Disease, on Sunday, August 1, 2021 at the age of 93. Sandra passed away peacefully at Pioneer Elder Care in St Catharines, where she has received outstanding care for the past two and a half years.

Sandra is survived, and will be greatly missed, by her daughters Kathryn and Fiona, her granddaughters Maia and Emily, son-in-law, Michael, and nieces and nephews in Scotland and Canada. Sandra was predeceased by her loving husband Bill, her dear friend Steve Nickling, her parents Agnes and Alexander, and her siblings – Andrew, John, Letty, Anne, and Jean.

Originally from Scotland, Sandra moved to Hamilton in 1952 with husband, Bill, who taught in the Economics Department at McMaster University. Sandra embraced her adopted country and was actively involved in the Hamilton community from the start. After working briefly at Bertram’s in Dundas, Sandra trained as a teacher and taught English at Westdale and Southmount in Hamilton. Teaching was a lifelong passion of hers, and she helped to teach new immigrants English after she retired. Sandra received both her BA and MA from McMaster University and was a member of the McMaster Women’s Club for many years. Sandra also acted in the McMaster University Theatre Society (MUTS), wrote book reviews for the Hamilton Spectator, contributed to a book on Florence Nightingale, and volunteered for the Hamilton Philharmonic and the Hamilton Art Gallery. Sandra had many hobbies, including woodworking, painting and singing. She took art classes at both the Ancaster Seniors Centre and the Dundas Valley School of Art, attended Oxford Choral Singing Holidays, and sang in the Marshall Memorial Church Choir. Sandra and Bill loved to travel and they spent many summers in Scotland and on cultural exchanges in Europe.

Sandra was also a lifelong animal lover who cared for many adopted or inherited dogs and cats - Dawny Dawn, Kelly, Simon, Dante, Dijha and Maggie.

We would like to thank the staff at Pioneer Elder Care and Amica Dundas, the VON and St Elizabeth’s nurses, our LHIN coordinators, Home Instead, Rosehill Lane, and Doctors Kane-Corriveau, Prangley, Macaluso and Arvinte, for their help and support over the years. We have been blessed and will be forever grateful for the outstanding PSWs we have had – especially Anne, Gloria, Celia, Abe, Adrian and Maria.

A family cremation has already taken place. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or to an animal rescue of your choice.
