August 22, 1946 - July 17, 2024
It is with profound sadness and regret that we announce the death of our beloved sister, Kathleen Lucille Cornish. A Dundas resident for the past 23 years, Kathleen died peacefully at home, Wednesday, July 17, 2024. She was surrounded by family and friends, wrapped in their love. Kathleen was 77. A native of Belleville, Ontario, she worked in retail sales for about 20 years, working her way up from stockroom girl to saleslady at the former Robert Simpsons department store in Toronto. She later worked in sales at the former Eaton’s store in Sudbury, the former Simpson’s store at the Fairview mall in Kitchener, and the former K Mart in Peterborough. Kathleen never married and had no children, but she had three nephews, Mark, James and Sean, to whom she was a nanny and loved like sons. She had boundless energy and a tender heart. She also had what one neighbour described as “the heart of a tiger.” She was very protective of those she loved and fearless in their defence. An ardent Elvis fan, Kathleen looked forward to her many annual trips to the Elvis Festival in Collingwood. Predeceased by her parents, Mark and Gloria Cornish, and her brother, Donald, who died last July, she is survived by her brothers, Mark (the late Ursula Bartlett) and James (the late Cettina Giampapa); her sister, Dianne; her nephews (sons of James and Cettina) Mark and his spouse, Mike, James and his spouse, Amy, and Sean and his girlfriend, Erica; her sisters-in-laws, Francesca Giampapa and Sandra Giampapa and her spouse, Neil Walters; her aunts, Sharon Hopkin and Gail Brown and several cousins. Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Donations, in Kathleen’s memory, to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated. Her family would like to thank many people who provided care and comfort during Kathleen’s long and courageous battle with cancer. They include: Dr. David Choi of the Head and Neck Unit at St. Joseph’s Hospital; the wonderful nurses of St. Joe’s 4th floor Chest Department; Dr. Louise Bordeleau of the Oncology Department at the Juravinski Cancer Centre; Deb Evans, pain management specialist at Juravinski; Dr. Judy Hindson (retired) formerly of King West Medical Associates; palliative care nurse extraordinaire Mui Tran of Bayshore Health Care; palliative care nurses, Lilly Hamilton and Melissa Brown of Bayshore Health Care; Lola of St. Elizabeth’s Nursing; several Personal Support Workers from Stay At Home Nursing; Bob Tees, spiritual care practitioner and friend; Dr. Shelly Sender, Medical Assistance In Dying (MAID) provider; Claire Shove, MAID navigator at St. Joe’s Hospital; and last but not least friends, Carole Wilson, Marjorie Griffiths, Ursula Altorf, Alberta Murphy-Smith, Cathy Walker-Hammond and Wayne Peters.
