David “Dave” Richard Harris; Passed away on July 2nd, 2022 at the age of 75 at St. Peter’s Hospital in Hamilton, Ontario. He is predeceased by his parents, Audrey Christiansen and John Harris, and his brother, Kenneth “Ken” Harris. He is survived by his wife, Karen Hewson, children, Kelly Harris, Tracy VanSantvoort (Jazz) and Brenda Harris (Justin Storey), as well as his grandchildren, Robert and David, Brigitte and Dorian, and Abby and Ronan. Dave was born in Toronto, Ontario where he spent most of his childhood. He moved to Halifax when his father was redeployed there by the Canadian Navy. His adult life was spent in various parts of the GTA. Dave was the ultimate jack of all trades. He worked on farms in the Canadian Prairies, served in the Canadian Army artillery division, worked as a nurse and OR Tech at Women’s College, Toronto General and Scarborough General hospitals, earned his auto mechanic license and worked at many dealerships in the GTA. He later joined Black Creek Pioneer Village as a historical interpreter and concluded his working life with 20 years at the Toronto Transit Commission as a mechanic before retiring in 2009. Dave had a rich and varied list of hobbies he pursued. He was part of various reenactment groups including Willet’s Rangers, Hoisington’s New York Rangers and the Queen’s Rangers. Dave also loved music, listening and dancing to, as well as playing. Dave played the bagpipes with the Oshawa Legion Pipe and Drum Band band and later with Highland Creek Legion band. He also taught himself how to play the flute and guitar. He loved woodworking, leatherworking, restoring antique firearms and an old Sunbeam automobile. His wide breadth of knowledge led us to refer to him as the precursor to Google, resolving many a dispute about facts, particularly historical and vocabulary related. Dave will be fondly remembered as being trustworthy, strong-willed and extremely frank. He was always quick to give praise when due and his love was never in question. Everyone knew exactly how he felt about any given topic or person. Family was very important to him and he also enjoyed the benefit of many friends throughout his life. At David’s request, there will be no public visitation or funeral service held. Cremation has taken place. Interment will take place at a later date, to be determined. If desired, donations made to the Niagara Dog Rescue, https://niagaradogrescue.com/donate.php, would be gratefully appreciated by the family.
