It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Shirley. She died peacefully at her home with her children at her side.
Shirley is predeceased by the father of her children Rod McDonell, son John McDonell and daughter Marion Flatt. Mom is survived by her children, Delta (Randy), September (Donn), Carol (Bert) and Donell.
Mom is also survived by her grandchildren, Jordan (Samantha), Cherie (Kevin), Daniel (Erica), Andre (Brittany), Chantal (Dustin), Mitchell, Jonathon (Kimberly). GG as she was known is survived by ten great grandchildren who all knew and loved her.
Shirley is survived by her brother Donald, sister Karen and sister-in-law Joan, son in law Sid as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. She is also survived by Janet, Nancy, Alan and Kenny, the children and grandchild of her predeceased partner of many years Len Stair.
Shirley was born in Lenore Lake Saskatchewan and frequently went back to the prairie with her sister Karen for great visits with family and friends. Shirley travelled with her partner Len to England and Scotland and had a very memorable trip to Hawaii with her daughters plus several trips to Phoenix to visit her youngest son.
Shirley was a strong woman and raised 6 children at the marina off Cherry Point Road in Cowichan Bay. When the marina sold she moved to Duncan, finished raising the youngest two on her own and went to school to further her education. She worked at the school board then moved to Victoria and worked as a library assistant until her retirement.
Shirley was an avid bridge player and played at several clubs. For the past 10 years she lived in Duncan where she was closer to her family and friends and able to enjoy many lovely family events.
There will be no service by request but in August there will be a party in celebration of mom and her son John.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Parkinson’s Society of Canada or a charity of your choice.
The family would like to extend our thanks to Doctor Wenzel-Smith for her dedication and kind care of our mom. We would also like to thank mom’s Home Care team who provided excellent care.
