Charlie grew up in a rural area in a log cabin. He graduated from Strathcona High School in Edmonton. He also graduated from the University of Alberta and the University of Wisconsin, Madison with a Ph.D. in physical chemistry. He did his post doctorate work at Yale University for one year. On July 9, 1948 he married the love of his life, Eleanor Aileen Wournell at McDougall United Church in Edmonton.
He had a great interest in history, theology, and philosophy and learning in general. He loved teaching and was very dedicated to his students. He was an avid reader and was very generous in lending books and materials to students and colleagues. In his free time he enjoyed canoeing, hiking, and taking in Lake Superior.
Charlie was a long time member of Pilgrim Congregational Church, a 70 year member of the American Chemical Society, and a 50 year member of the Royal Chemical Society.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor.
Charlie will be greatly missed by his son, Jim Nichol of Island Lake and his daughter, Lynda (Al) Parrella of Duluth; grandsons, Joe and Freddie Parrella; he also leaves behind many loving relatives , friends, and little dog, Alfie.
Visitation: 1:00 until the 2:00 p.m. Funeral Service Sunday, June 25, 2017 at Pilgrim Congregational Church, 2310 E 4th Street, Duluth. Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.
