James Klapp Putnam, 95, of Dublin, Ohio died Saturday, June 18, 2022. Jim was born September 17, 1926 to the late W. Lloyd and Verda Putnam. He is survived by his daughter, Laurel A. Clouse(Roger Hawk) of Statesboro, GA., son, Charles L. Putnam(Karen) of Dublin, OH, grandchildren Rob Clouse(Brandy}, Chris Clouse(Kim), Patrick Putnam, Kevin Putnam(Alex) and Annie Putnam: great-grandchildren, Brayden Clouse, Landon Clouse, Addison Clouse, Mason Clouse and Bella Clouse. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley G. Putnam, his parents W. Lloyd and Verda Putnam and his three brothers Bob, Hugh and Allen.
Jim grew up in St. Paris, OH and graduated from high school in 1943. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was on the destroyer escort Richard S. Bull in the Pacific theatre. Following active duty, Jim graduated from Wittenberg University, where he met Shirley, in 1950. Jim was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He and Shirley married in 1950 and resided in the Columbus area for the rest of his life. Jim worked for Nationwide Insurance and Motorists Mutual Insurance before starting his own agency, Putnam Insurance Agency, in Clintonville, from scratch. Jim was a Certified Insurance Counselor, obtaining his designation with the very first class awarded that title in Ohio. He was a member of the Professional Insurance Agents of Ohio for his entire career. Jim continued his military service in the US Naval Reserves and rose to the rank of Commander before retiring. He returned to active duty briefly during the Cuban Missile Crisis and worked with Naval Intelligence out of Miami, FL during the conflict. He was a founding member of Ascension Lutheran Church since 1950. Jim was an accomplished tennis player who played competitive doubles into his mid eighties. He was an avid sports fan and a fixture in the stands for all of his children's and grand children's events. He was proud of his family and was a devoted husband, caring Father and the best grandfather and great grandfather anyone could ask for. The family would like to thank the staff at The Grand in Dublin and Kindred Hospice for their loving care during his final weeks.
Friends may call Monday, June 27, 2022 from 5-7 p.m. at Schoedinger Funeral Home, 5980 Perimeter Drive, Dublin, Ohio. A brief service will be held at 7 p.m. that same evening at the facility. Entombment at Kingwood Memorial Park the following morning for family members.
