Glenna Ella Campbell Smith Taubert

On Friday, December 29, 2023, our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother Glenna Ella Campbell Smith Taubert passed away peacefully at Friendship Village of Dublin in the presence of loving family at her bedside. We will always remember her as a woman who was strong in her faith and lived her life with grit and grace. She was kind to everyone and knew no enemies.

She was born to Zetta Huber Campbell and PG Campbell in Eldorado, Ohio, on May 24, 1921. Both of her parents were teachers. When Glenna was six years old, she moved to a farm in Monroe Township, Ohio. A source of pride was that their barn was chosen to be an Ohio Bicentennial Barn on US Route 127 in Preble County.

She graduated from Monroe High School in 1939 and went to OSU where she majored in English and Home Economics. She joined Alpha Chi Omega sorority where she has been an active life-long member. After graduation in 1943, Glenna taught high school in Eaton, Ohio, for two years before leaving in 1944 to marry her high school sweetheart Jimmy Smith, who had joined the Army Air Corps and was stationed at Wright Field in Dayton. While living in Vandalia, Ohio, their oldest daughter, Marcia, was born in 1946 followed by younger daughter, Beverly, in 1948.

The family moved with the Air Force to Germany, Washington D.C., and Massachusetts. Glenna taught elementary school in Maryland and Massachusetts. She was an officer in the base wives’ club, a Girl Scout leader, and Sunday school teacher. The family enjoyed exploring parks and historical sites. They fished and water skied in the summers and ice skated in the winter.

When Jim passed away and left Glenna a young 40-year old widow, she moved the family back to Ohio where she had family. She settled in Upper Arlington and again, enrolled in OSU where she earned her master’s degree in English and took a job teaching 7th grade English and social studies at Jones Jr. High in Upper Arlington. She joined the Alpha Iota Alpha Alumna Chapter of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority and served as its president attending a number of national conventions as a delegate. She has been a member of Alpha Chi Omega for more than 75 years.

Toward the end of her teaching career, she reconnected with an old friend, also widowed, from the Massachusetts days. Eventually, she married Bob Taubert. They were very involved in church activities at Mountview Baptist, and spent a lot of their time entertaining family and traveling throughout the USA as well as overseas.

They moved to Friendship Village of Dublin in 1993 and got very involved with Village clubs and activities. Unfortunately, Bob passed away in 1997. Glenna was a member and president of the Friendship Village of Dublin Woman’s Club. She was a member of the Ohio Historical Society and an ardent supporter of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and The Wilds.

Glenna in preceded in death by her husbands, Jimmy Smith and Bob Taubert; daughter, Beverly Evans of Columbus; and son-in-law, Steve of Columbus. She leaves behind her daughter, Marcia (Neil) Gahagan of Ft Myers, FL; step-daughter, Susan Herrada of Hilliard; and step-daughter, Nancy (Neil) Shaver of Colfax, NC. She also leaves behind niece Betsy Johnson of Lewis Center and numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Glenna was admired by those who knew her, and she was a role model for how to live life well to young and old alike. She will be greatly missed by those she leaves behind on this earth, but surely welcomed by open arms to the heavenly kingdom.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Schoedinger Dublin, 5980 Perimeter Drive, where a visitation will be held on Friday, January 19, 2024, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. also at Schoedinger Dublin.
