Clara Jane Callahan

Clara Jane Callahan passed away peacefully on December 12, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Born on September 4, 1937, Clara brought warmth, strength, and an infectious spirit to all who knew her.

The 10th of 13 children, Clara grew up in a lively and close-knit family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Everett Merrill and Leta Ruth Grabill, as well as her siblings Rex, Carl, Paul, Lee, Ray, Jerry, Ann (Dent), Phyllis (Jaynes), and Nancy (Burtch). Clara is survived by her children, Karen Saponaro (Jim

Saponaro) and Glenn Davis (Kathy Fox), as well as her cherished grandchildren, Jenna Saponaro (Erin McTiernan) and Jessica Saponaro (Jacob Hodge). She also leaves behind three siblings, Nyla (Johnson), Mary (Thomas), and Dean Grabill, as well as many wonderful cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Clara graduated from West High School in 1955, where she was well-known for her outgoing personality, sharp sense of humor, and athleticism. Her classmates recognized her humor and intellect, naming her the “Wittiest” of her class. She enjoyed participating in girls’ sports and made lifelong friends during school. Clara married her high school sweetheart, Jack Davis, and they built a loving home for their two children, Karen and Glenn, on the west side of Columbus, Ohio.

Clara’s career spanned banking and education, including 25 years as an Administrative Assistant in the Athletic Department at Westland High School. She thrived in her role, supporting student-athletes and forming lasting relationships within her community.

Later in life, Clara married the love of her life, John Callahan. Together, they shared a passion for golf, enjoying memberships at several clubs and competing in tournaments. Clara and John spent winters in Ft. Myers, Florida, where they built a vibrant community of friends and family. They traveled extensively,

creating cherished memories until John’s passing in 1997.

A proud American, Clara believed deeply in civic engagement and the importance of giving back. She was an active member of the Lee County Republican Women’s Club, advocating and volunteering for causes she was passionate about.

Clara was also an enthusiastic Ohio State University sports fan. She never missed a Buckeyes football or basketball game and celebrated a major victory last year when she won a March Madness pool. Her quick wit and humor made her the life of every gathering, and she was always up for a lively debate or

conversation. Tech-savvy and modern, Clara stayed connected with her friends and family through her iPhone and email, keeping up with current events and maintaining relationships from every stage of her life.

After 25 wonderful years in Ft. Myers, Clara returned to Dublin, Ohio, where she was lovingly cared for by her daughter, Karen. This care allowed her to live independently while remaining close to her family. Clara’s Christian faith was a source of comfort and strength throughout her life, providing her with a profound sense of peace.

Clara will be remembered for her sharp mind, loving heart, and the joy she brought to those around her. She leaves a legacy of love, laughter, and resilience.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Schoedinger Dublin, 5980 Perimeter Drive, Dublin, Ohio 43017. Per Clara's request, a private graveside service will follow on Thursday, December 19, 2024. She will be buried at Muhlenberg Township Cemetery beside her late husband, John Callahan.

In honor of the military service in her family and in lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the Tunnel To Towers Foundation in Clara’s honor.
