Anthony M. Matteo Sr.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Anthony Matteo and Marie DelBene (Carbone), and his two brothers Carl and Larry. In addition, Virginia and Sam Yannessa, whom he held in a very special place in his heart.

He is survived by his former wife and lifelong friend, LaRae Matteo; two sons Anthony and Jeff (Emily); and four grandchildren, Luci, Sophia, Izzy, and Alana.

Anthony was born on April 4, 1941, in New Castle, Pennsylvania. He grew-up in New Castle and attended New Castle High School, where he played football for the Hurricanes. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and briefly attended Youngstown State University. He earned an executive degree from Carnegie Mellon University, which he carried with great pride. During his time at CMU, he participated in an Outward Bound program in the Florida Everglades that left an indelible impression on his life and work.

Anthony worked 30+ years at the Kobacker Company. He started as a part-time clerk at the Picway Shoes store in New Castle, Pennsylvania, in 1964 and ended his career in Columbus, Ohio, as President of Picway Shoes. He established many lifelong friends throughout his career and his influence was heavily felt and celebrated. Anthony’s secondary career landed him in multiple leadership roles at CompUSA in Columbus, Indianapolis, and Louisville.

Anthony had a love for music, tennis, and racquetball. He was a diehard Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates fan. He was avid movie buff, loved doing the daily crossword puzzle, and never let a day go by without checking the markets multiple times. His work carried him far and near, but his most beloved travels were to Hilton Head Island for family vacations that started in 1979 and continued through 2020.

He was known as Papa and often “Donut Man” to his four grandchildren whom he adored.

He was a dedicated founding member of the St. Brigid of Kildare parish in Dublin, Ohio, where he served as an usher for many years.

Calling hours will be held Friday, December 29, 2023, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at St. Brigid of Kildare, 7179 Avery Rd., Dublin, Ohio, 43017. Father James Black will preside over the funeral mass beginning at 11:00 a.m. Committal will take place in New Castle, Pennsylvania, at a later date.
