James Thomas Pittman, Jr., age 98, of Hiawassee and formerly of Douglasville, Georgia, passed away on Saturday, July 13, 2024. He was born March 15, 1926 in Atlanta, Georgia. James proudly served his country as a WWII Veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving on the USS Doyen. James was at the bottom of the hill on the day the United States flag was raised on Iwo Jima. He retired with a long career, serving as Captain, with the Atlanta City Fire Department. In his younger years, James worked as a lifeguard at the swimming pool at Grant Park. He loved participating in Chili Cook-offs—even winning a few. In his spare time, James loved to play golf.
Preceding him in death were his wife, Beth Jones Pittman; his parents, James T. Pittman, Sr. and Margaret Pittman; and brother and sister-in-law, Charles E. Pittman and Ann Pittman.
Those left to cherish his memory are daughters, Kathy English (Randy) and Karol Kisor (Jimmy); two grandchildren, Ryan English and Heather English; six great-grandchildren, Bryson, Bailey, Brianna, Zoe, Caleb and Maggie; nephew, Chuck and Gail Pittman; great-nephew, Kevin and Janel Pittman; as well as other family members and James also leaves behind a host of friends. He will be missed by all who knew him.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, July 16, 2024 from 12:00 Noon until 2:00 PM. The funeral service will follow in the Rosehaven Chapel at 2:00 PM with Brother Dale Barnett officiating. Following the service, James will be laid to rest in Rosehaven Memorial Park next to his beloved Beth.
