Dr. Clark Robinson

Visitation will be held Sunday July 2nd from 5:00 - 8:00 PM at Whitley-Garner at Rosehaven Funeral Home, 8640 Rose Avenue, Douglasville, GA. Visitation will also precede the funeral services on Monday July 3rd at First Baptist Church in Douglasville, 5900 Prestley Mill Road, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, with the funeral following at 1:00 PM with Reverend John Pennington officiating.

Dr. Clark Robinson was born in Bowdon, Georgia on June 5, 1925. He attended Indian Creek Elementary School and graduated from Mount Zion High School. When he was seventeen, he joined the United States Maritime Services as a Merchant Marine and served his country during World War II. He was in London during the buzz bomb attacks. He participated in operation CORNCOB, serving on one of the twenty-two merchant ships, which were part of the formation of the breakwater during the D-Day Invasion and Battle of Normandy on June 6, 1944. After the war, he left the military to pursue higher education. He attended West Georgia College for two years, then completed his undergraduate education at the University of Georgia in Athens, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. In 1961, he received his doctorate degree at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. He then completed a rotating surgical internship at Macon General Hospital, and finished his residency in 1963. He moved to Douglasville later that year and served as a solo Family Practice doctor until his daughter, Tammy, joined him in the practice in 1993.

He served on active staff at the old Douglasville Hospital on Fairburn Road and then later at Douglas General Hospital, now Wellstar Douglas Hospital. He was an active proponent in establishing the new hospital to better meet the needs of the growing community. He participated on many committees at both hospitals, as well as serving as Chief of Staff. He was also one of the Medical Examiners for the State of Georgia. In 2002, Dr. Robinson was recognized by the Georgia Academy of Family Physicians with their highest award as Family Doctor of the Year.

Active in his community, Dr. Robinson served on the Planning and Zoning Board during the development of the Fairways and Arbor Station Subdivisions. He also served as a bank director for the Commercial Bank, which later became Regions Bank. He served on the Foundation of the Medical College of Georgia and was a generous supporter of the Scholarship Program for the medical school.

Dr. Clark Robinson lived a life of action and selfless service, epitomizing the character of his generation and exemplified the legacy of the family doctor. He was affectionately known as “Doc” by many. He took care of many generations of families in Douglasville and the surrounding counties for 44 years until his retirement at age 82. He took care of people at his office as well as making many house calls, Saturday hours, met patients after hours, set broken bones, delivered babies, and performed surgeries. He took care of his patients any time of the day or night. In addition to operating his busy family practice, he served as the team doctor for the Douglas County High School Tigers football team, treated inmates at the local jail, and saw patients at Garden Terrace, now Douglasville Nursing and Rehabilitation. His patients loved him because of his tireless devotion to them. He had a compassion and dedication to his patients and the community that he loved.

The building at 6671 East Church Street in Downtown Douglasville, where he practiced medicine for so many years, was dedicated on his behalf on July 17, 2008. He carried on the tradition of the medical practice that started in that building with Dr. Hamilton, and later the dental practice of Dr. Turk.

Dr. Robinson was married to Louise Hughie Robinson on September 8,1951. They were married for 63 years. They had two children, Beth Robinson Johnson, and Dr. Tammy Robinson, both of Douglasville, Georgia.

Dr. Clark Robinson is survived by his two children and a sister, Berta Robinson Baklini of Wilmington, North Carolina, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Dr. Clark Robinson is preceded in death by his wife, Louise Hughie Robinson, as well as brothers and sisters, Nellie Robinson Miles, Rebecca Robinson Redden, Arnold Robinson, Nan Robinson Davidson, Cavelle Robinson, Martin Robinson, Dr. Robert "Bob" Robinson, Ben Robinson, and Jerry Robinson.
