He is survived by his wife Jacquelyn (Jackie) Chatham; his daughter and her husband, Teresa and Chris Mealer; his son and his wife, Doug Jr. and Wanda Chatham; and his grandchildren, Savannah Mealer, Reed, and Carmen Chatham. He is also survived by two brothers Howard and Dwight Chatham, and two sisters, Beverly Hilbert, and Patricia Willis.
Douglas M. Chatham, Sr., loves to tell of his conversion to Christ in a jail cell in 1957. Only age 18 at the time, he soon received a pardon and entered the ministry.
He served as Director of Graduate Studies at Beulah Heights University. He previously served eight years as Chair of Bible and Theology. Prior to coming to Beulah Heights in 1993, he served for 36 years as pastor, church planter and missionary. He led over 30 holy land study tours and participated in archaeological digs. He holds the Master of Religious Education degree from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and the Doctor of Ministry degree from Erskine Theological Seminary.
Dr. Chatham was in the Gospel ministry since 1957. During these 60 years of ministry He has served as a church planter, pastor, evangelist, missionary and teacher. He led in planting 8 US churches and 31 churches overseas; directed more than 75 short-term mission teams and over 30 holy land tours; authored 5 books and several study guides. He holds post graduate degrees from 3 seminaries: Baptist, Pentecostal, Presbyterian. “Dr. C,” as students affectionately called him, served as a full professor in Biblical Studies at Beulah Heights Bible College in Atlanta, He also was a member of the faculty, served as Chair of Bible and Theology and was the founding director of Missions Overseas Short Term (MOST). Currently he served on staff at Burnt Hickory Baptist Church in teaching and missions.
With his best friend and partner in ministry of 58 years, Jackie, they faced many trials and adventures. He would simply say whenever asked to introduce himself in group, ‘I’m Doug Chatham just passing through on my way to heaven’.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, January 9, 2018 from 5 until 8 o’clock pm. A funeral service will be held at Burnt Hickory Baptist Church, 5145 Due West Rd. Powder Springs, GA 30127, on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at 11 o’clock am with Pastor Mike Stephens officiating. Interment will be private.
