Charles "Max" Jordan, affectionately known as Groucho and proudly called Papa by his family, passed away on December 13, 2024, at the age of 89. Max was born on January 1, 1935, in Douglasville, Georgia.
Max was the beloved husband of Elaine Jordan for over 64 years, and a devoted father to Lynne, husband Russell Thomas, Leigh, husband Keith Shadix, and Debbie, husband Jeff Tobin. He was the cherished grandfather to seven grandchildren and a loving great-grandfather to thirteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law Gary Yerkey, his great-grandson Brooks Yerkey, and his son-in-law Mike Roland. Max is also survived by his brother, Joe Jordan.
Max was a man of deep faith who loved God and lived a life grounded in Christian values. His love for family was equally strong, and his unwavering commitment to both was evident in everything he did. Max’s faith guided him through life’s challenges, and he was a pillar of strength to those around him. His devotion to his family was a reflection of his love for God, and he made sure to instill those same values in his children and grandchildren. After graduating from high school, Max began his career at Western Electric, where he worked installing phone equipment. At the age of 21, Max enlisted in the U.S. Army, volunteering for the paratroopers. He was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division, known as the Screaming Eagles, and served in Kentucky and Georgia. Following his honorable discharge from the Army, Max returned to Western Electric, where he worked for many years and retired in 1986. Max had a passion for horses and farming. He served as the American Paint Horse Association National Director for the State of Georgia for many years and was a professional horse trainer. Known for his love of all animals, Max also raised cattle and became famous for bringing Texas Longhorn cattle to the Southeast. While Max was known for his gruff exterior but gentle and kind nature, his nickname Groucho was a humorous contrast to his warm and caring demeanor. He loved people, animals, and life itself, leaving a legacy of kindness, humor, and dedication.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, December 28, 2024, at First Baptist Church of Douglasville.
The family will welcome guests for visitation at 11:00 am, prior to the service.
In honoring Max’s memory, his family would like to celebrate his life as he lived it: full of love, laughter, faith, and devotion to those who meant the most to him. In lieu of flowers, the family asked that donations be made to one of his favorite charities; St. Jude Children’s Hospital or Wounded Warrior Foundation.
