Paula was born in Regina, Saskatchewan to Paul Buxton on July 24th, 1969. The family moved to Karsdale, Nova Scotia in 1976 and the area has remained Paula’s home ever since. Her only time living out of province was when she attended The Culinary Institute of America, the best cooking school in North America.
Paula owned and operated Leo’s Café in Annapolis Royal. It was the hub from which she served and cared for her community. If you ever ate at the Annapolis Basin Conference Center, Call of the Wild at Upper Clements Theme Park, Garrison House, took a bike tour through the Hillsdale House, or ate at a fundraising brunch or dinner you may have eaten food that Paula made. Once described as a marshmallow cookie, Paula seemed hard on the outside, but past that there was a sweet center. She prided herself on getting things done, no matter the project, and she brought everyone along for the ride. Paula was the most loyal of people, fiercely loyal to family, staff, friends and causes. She was a supporter of underdogs and generous to a fault if there was anyone in need. She gave her time to many causes and events including, but not limited to: The Gardens Dinner, Easter Eggstravaganza, King’s Theatre, Friend of the Annapolis Pool Society, and animal shelters. She volunteered in the schools helping with the fluoride program, teaching kids to cook, and encouraging loads of kids to skip their hearts out. Her super-power was that she could wish for any food item to go on sale and it would magically appear in the next week’s flyers. Her kryptonite was that when she spoke ill of someone they often happened behind her as she was speaking. Paula loved camping, planning family adventures, and spending time at the family cottage. She enjoyed watching reality TV, Coronation Street, and sad movies. Her favorite books were ones that tore at your heartstrings and, of course, she loved reading obituaries.
Paula is survived by her husband Michael Tompkins, her children Gemma, Benjamin, Rowan, and Georgia, her sister Laura and her husband Gavin, her father Paul and his wife Janet, Louie her beloved dog and the family cat, Spock.
Donations can be made to the Paula Buxton Memorial Fund at any Scotiabank which will be used for an AWEC Scholarship in Paula’s name (to continue her support of the youth of the community), and to fund the placement of a bench in her honor in one of the places she walked her dogs. One of the easiest ways to remember Paula is to support someone or something in your local community.
There will be a celebration of Paula’s life on July 24, 2021. The location and time of this event is to be determined and will be posted through social media.
