It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Douglas Oliver, 59, of Bay View. Douglas passed at home with his beloved wife and sons by his side. He was the youngest son of the late Garnet and Rae (nee Turnbull) Oliver.
Douglas dedicated his life to the sea, following in the footsteps of his father. Beginning his journey on his father's scallop boat, the Lorraine O., Douglas eventually assumed the role of captain after his father's passing. Throughout his career, he worked on numerous vessels, and loved sharing tales of his fishing adventures with his sons, imparting in them a profound appreciation for their maritime heritage.
While the ocean held a special place in Douglas's heart, he also found solace in the tranquility of the woods. He nurtured his maple trees with care and eagerly awaited maple sap season each spring. He spent much of his time hunting, woodcutting, and exploring his property with his wife and sons. The woods became his sanctuary, where he found peace and contentment.
Douglas will be remembered for his stubbornness and physical strength, qualities that defined him to all who knew him. His spirited antics will forever be cherished by his friends. Though he has departed, Douglas's legacy will endure through the memories shared by loved ones.
Douglas is survived by his wife and best-friend, Ginger (nee Murphy), his sons Scott and Alex, daughter Kristen, sisters Linda and Lois, brothers David, Randy, Michael, and Glenn, four grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, mother-in-law Suzanne, and brothers-in-law Keith and Kelly.
Predeceased by his parents, and father-in-law Robert.
Throughout his battle with cancer, Douglas was touched by the outpouring of support and kindness from the community. The family extends special appreciation to the compassionate nurses in the oncology department in Yarmouth. Special thanks to Douglas's brother David, for selflessly helping him these past few years. Douglas often said he was glad he had you in his corner.
A celebration of Doug's life will be held at a date soon to be announced. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Douglas's memory to a charity of your choice.
Fair winds and following seas, Doug. You will be deeply missed.
