It is with great sadness that the family of Douglas Donald Gidney, age 77, of Weymouth, announces the passing of loving husband, Dad, and grandfather, on September 16, 2023, at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital while surrounded by his family. Doug was born in Digby and was the eldest son of the late Donald and Martha (Sweeney) Gidney. Doug started working with his father at a very young age doing electrical, plumbing, heating work, and tv repair. As a teen, Doug was a page boy in the House of Assembly in Halifax. Before he was married, he ventured off to Toronto, ON. and worked for a time at National Rubber. He was in army cadets, a scout leader, director of the Weymouth Credit Union, and a member of the Digby County Cruisers. Doug was a jack of all trades, honestly it would be easier to list the things he didn’t do rather than list the things he did. He touched the hearts of everyone he met. Doug is survived by his loving wife Sandy, his 2 sons , Rollie and Calvin, his 2 daughters in law, Natalie and Juanita, 3 granddaughters: Augustine, Genevieve, Magdalena; sisters Louise Gavel, Donna (Bob) Beatty; sisters in law Sue Theriault, and Diane Jordan, many nieces and nephews, 1 great nephew, 1 great great nephew and 1 great great niece. Besides his parents, Doug was predeceased by an infant sister and his brother, Gary. Visitation will be 6-8pm, Sunday, September 24, 2023 from Jayne’s Funeral Home, Weymouth North. Funeral service will be held 2 pm Monday, September 25, 2023 from St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Weymouth. Father Raymond Odumuko will officiate with cremation to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations in Doug’s memory can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to a charity of your choice.
