It is with VERY VERY Heavy Hearts, we announce the passing of Dora Alice May MacAlpine, 82 of Digby, Nova Scotia. April 24th 2023. Surrounded by her loving family with all the comforts and care in her home.
Born in Martins Point, NS on May 23rd 1940, she was the daughter of the late William and Emily( Millar ) Barkhouse. Dora was 1 of 16 children, she is predeceased by her sisters: Nellie, Grace, Rose, Joyce, Velma and brothers: Robie, Walter, David, Charlie, Ervin, Lindsay and Paul. She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, John MacAlpine, daughter, Melissa(Roger) sister, Betty and Brothers Eric(Bea), Andrew and many many special in-laws, nieces and nephews.
At the age of 16, Dora moved to Toronto, Ontario to live with her sister Nellie, where she took a " Comptometer Operator " course. Dora worked at Loblaws head office building in their payroll department. When Dora turned 19 years of age, she met the Love of her Life, her Soul Mate, husband John and together they ventured forward inseparable and strong living in Ontario and California, until they relocated to Digby, Nova Scotia in 1966, where they truly set down their roots and started a family.
Dora 1st and foremost wanted to be at home with her daughter Melissa, and then continued to work alongside her husband John, serving the Digby community for 32 years at the Sunset Beverage Room and Grill Ltd. as the payroll office administrator, later in years she also ran the kitchen, where she cooked up a storm for their customers with pride, passion and love.
Dora enjoyed her life, travelling the world alongside John, by plane, car and their beloved motorhome(s)over the last 30+ years. Camping in Hilltown was a passion, BUT the South Shore ran deep in her heart, where she always enjoyed boating with her brother Eric and wife Bea and family, Mahone Bay, Oak Island, Chester was her special place, mind body and soul.
Dora was passionate at sewing/knitting and enjoyed curling over the years. Her love for being a wife, mother, Aunt, and great friend came very easy for her, she loved each and every niece and nephew as they were her own, they warmed her heart with pride and joy with each and every moment they were together.
In her later years, Home is where she wanted to be, she felt at peace, comfortable and safe enjoying the changes of the seasons, watching the birds and the stunning ocean views, sunrises and sunsets.... she welcomed each and every visit from family and friends with a smile and unwavering love. Dora is/was the foundation of her family, a inner strength like no other, she loved privately, with grace and style. Her compassion, kindness, courage and wit has touched everyone who has had the pleasure to know her and be near her.
Dora, Mom, you are the love of our life, a staple of inspiration, pride and joy, yesterday, today and forever. Your faith in god, family and friendship is a blessing!! Thank you Dora, Mom, for being you, I am proud to be your daughter, John, your devoted husband, family and friend. Fly high our sweet angel, FLY HIGH!! you will live in us always xoxo.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Jayne's Funeral Home, Digby, NS, cremation has taken place, there will be no visitation. A funeral service will be held, Wednesday May 3rd 2023, reflection 1:00pm service 2:00pm at the Baptist Church at 2 Mount St. Digby, NS. Officiated by Pastor Mark Cress. Donations may be made to the Atalanta Hospice Society-Fundy Hospice.
