Bruce G. Newman passed away peacefully at his home, on October 6, 2024. Bruce was born on October 7, 1932, in Lansing, Michigan at Sparrow Hospital to Beulah and George Newman. He graduated from Lansing Eastern High in 1950 and served two years in the Army in Korea where he drove a Tank. He later attended Lansing Business College, earning an Associate’s Degree.
He started working for the Lansing School District as an accountant in 1956. In 1965, as Lansing Community College separated from the Lansing Schools, Bruce became the College’s very first employee, as Controller. This position later became Business Manager, and later Vice President of Business and Finance. Bruce would retire from the College in 1994. During his career, Bruce helmed the College’s expansion from one building to one of the largest community college campuses in the state. In 1998, Bruce was awarded Vice President Emeritus status by the Board of Trustees.
Bruce was a member of the American Lung Association and Assistant Treasurer for the LCC Foundation. He was also active in the Michigan Community College Business Officials Association and the National Association of College and University Business Officials, and he Chaired the of Budget and Finance Advisory Committee at LCC.
Bruce loved family gatherings, especially the big Christmas Eve party. He had a passion for Golf and would often play 2-3 times per week after retirement. Bruce and Kay wintered in Alabama to avoid the cold, and to play more golf. Bruce challenged his mind doing the daily crossword puzzles and sudokus. He enjoyed doing the books for Eldorado Golf Course where he was in a league for a number of years post-retirement. Bruce and the family were members of Asbury United Methodist Church for 45 years, where he served as their Financial Secretary and as President of the Men’s Club.
Bruce is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Kay, of 60 years; his son, Brian and grandson Ajay, along with several nieces: Sharon, Pam, Joannie, Shelly, Sue, Carol, Vicki, Angie and Kristi, and nephews, John and Bob, and sister-in-law, Patti Moss. He was preceded in death by his mother, Beulah; sisters, Jane Pierce and brother-in-law John, and Judy Fox, brother-in-law Ken Moss, nephews, Mike, Jim, Rich, Steve, Tom and niece Mary.
The Memorial Service will be held at Gorsline Runciman in DeWitt. Visitations will be held on Friday October 18, 2024 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. The Memorial Service will be at 12:00 pm on Saturday, October 19, with the family receiving friends one hour prior to the service. A luncheon will follow the service at the Family Tree Café, also in DeWitt.
