Barbara Louise Marsh-Smith

Barbara Louise Marsh-Smith of DeWitt, age 72, passed away on Monday, September 17, 2018. Barb was born on January 8, 1946 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the daughter of Bill and Lucille Habig and Alice and Sam Cohen, all of whom preceded her in death.

Barb’s life was spent in the service of children. She was a teacher for the Lansing Public School District for many years. She had earned her Master’s degree in Reading Education from Michigan State University, and enjoyed teaching elementary students to love books and science. Barb had a heart for the poor, volunteering in many capacities throughout her life both in and outside the church. Taking care of her beloved dog, Itty Bit, and making her flowers grow brought Barb deep joy.

She will be missed by her children and grandchildren: John and Sarada Marsh and their children David, Claire, Nathaniel, Alison, and Colin; Jim and Leslie Marsh and their children Craig, Sarah, and Jacob; Amy Marsh, Blaine and Connor Sullivan; Ernie and Jen West and their children Ethan and Emma; Steve and Jen Marsh and their children Thomas and Luke. Barb’s siblings included Bill and Donna Habig, Ginger and the late Richard Rampino, Bob and Clara Habig, Peggy and the late Richard Wardle. Barb leaves behind many nieces and nephews as well as a circle of friends in her community.

The funeral mass will be held at her home parish, the Catholic Community of St. Jude in DeWitt, Michigan (801 N. Bridge Street), on Friday, September 28, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. with Father Bob Irish presiding. We will pray the rosary at 9:30 a.m. with visitation one hour before mass.

We are grateful for all the generous people, especially Tina Ashbrook and the Helping Hands ministry, who gave their time and talents to Barb’s care over the last decade. Her soul is at rest now with the Ultimate Healer.
