Zoila García, age 66, of Chicago, IL, passed away on Sunday June 7th, 2020 surrounded by her devoted husband and daughters. She was born on September 10, 1953 in Durango, MX to Adolfo García-Rodriguez and Manuela García Guerrero. She is survived by her loving husband Hector Fragoso and daughters Andrea and Angélica Fragoso.
In addition to devoting her life to her family, Zoila was a dedicated educator. She earned her Education Degree and Masters Degree in Bilingual Education from De Paul University. She was an educator all her professional life and taught at all levels beginning her career at Loop College (now Harold Washington), Josephinum High School, De La Salle High School, Mather High School and Inter-American Magnet School (IAMS).
She later went on to complete her Administrator’s Certificate from the New Leaders of New Schools Program and served as a “Shadow” principal at Galileo Elementary. A year later she became principal of Whittier Elementary School, serving the Whittier Community until her retirement. Throughout her career, Zoila built many lasting and dear friendships with many of her colleagues, especially those from IAMS and Whittier.
Shortly after her retirement in 2013, Zoila was diagnosed with breast cancer. For the next seven years she courageously fought despite the cancer returning several times and metastasizing to different parts of her body. She was a beautiful loving woman who never let her diagnosis keep her from enjoying life with her family and friends.
Zoila and Hector began their married life on June 12, 1982. We will celebrate her remarkable life on Hector and Zoila’s 38th wedding anniversary June 12, 2020.
Zoila is preceded in death by her loving father, Adolfo García Rodriguez, dear Father-in-law Lorenzo Fragoso, and cherished Brother-in-law Gilberto Diaz.
She is survived by her mother Manuela García Guerrero and mother-in-law Esther Sosa de Fragoso, her beloved siblings Jesus Manuel (Alicia) García, Margarita (Maximiliano) Diaz, Belia (Cuauhtemoc) Hernández, Fina (late Gilberto ) García-Diaz, Arnoldo García, Maria Guadalupe (Dennis) Ferguson and Miriam Fragoso. She was a proud and loving aunt, great aunt and great-great aunt to her many nieces and nephews.
Zoila was a wonderful and caring daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt and friend. Her memory will live on in ours, and her love will fill our hearts forever.
