Dear Mom,
I haven't written a note  for you in this space until now. It's hard for me to say goodbye. 
Something happens... & I think how I'll describe it to you in our next phone call. Just like with Dad, it still hits me that way before I realize I can't talk to him, & now, I can't talk to you. It's a sad feeling, but it's a good feeling too because I know our love as son and parents & our connections as family are still strong. 
So I'll say thank you. Thank you for your devotion to Dad and his devotion to you--together you built this family.Thank you for my sister and brothers--Steve, Mary and Scott. Thank you for raising us & for your special devotion to Steve. Thanks to you & Dad for teaching all of us to do the right thing, the right way. Thank you for helping me grow, to believe in God & pray, to do my schoolwork, to be responsible, to letting me play football, to enjoy fun activities you organized--home-grown entertainments, practicing the magic skills your father taught me, Cub Scout meetings & skits, looking forward to Christmas, parties with family & friends, & to support my decision to serve. Thanks for teaching us the lasting value of the thousands, thousands of photos, movies & videos you took to capture happy moments.
In some ways like your mom, you were blessed in life. In other ways, unlike her, you lived a more challenging life--raising 4 kids one of whom is handicapped, fighting depression, filled with thoughts that pulled you in different directions & paralyzed you with nervous indecision & later afflicted you with serious medical problems & multiple surgeries.You always hung in there,prayed,repaired & endured because young Margaret,pictured in this memorial as a girl & young lady dancing with a light, graceful touch, proved to be a pretty tough bird. Mom, I hope you have found peace & I hope you have found Dad.I know you missed him so.

Dear Mrs. Moon, 

I remember baked goods arriving on yellow styrofoam plates. 

I remember you donning a veil at St. Nick’s during early weekday Mass across the street. Occasionally I was your sleepy young altar boy, and you were the only person in the pews. I momentarily considered that a fine chance to wave hello from the altar, but I was not allowed to and gathered that you weren’t there to see me anyway. 

I remember dancing with you when Dad got remarried in 1989. Soon enough it became clear both me and Dad were overmatched that day : )

You provided stability, kindness, and wit to our rich Madison Street childhoods, something we all enjoyed and of course took for granted. 

Thanks for all you did for my brother Julian and his bestie Scott. They were young when I went off to college in 1983 and when Mom died in 1986, so I missed a lot of that chapter. 

Like others I am deeply regretful for how this happened and for having to say goodbye to you now, but I am heartened by the good times and your blessed life. 

Hello Mrs. Moon,

I was so sad to hear the news from Scott about your passing, when he called me the other day.  As I told Scott on that call - and as my dad has said on this memorial site - you were like a 2nd mother to me for so many years.  I know I haven't kept up much with you since I left Chicago but I've gotten updates from Scott when we spoke.  I'm so glad you lived a long, incredible life and got to see all the influence you made on your children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.  You made a real difference in my life too.

I will always remember being welcome into your home, and your generosity whenever I was there.  You would feed me and tell me my food would fall down into my feet if I didn't sit down while I ate.  You would offer up samples of your baked treats, even as Scott and I would learn where you stored the rest of them and help ourselves to the stash.  You were so kind and helpful to me and my brother and sisters when we lost our dear mother.

I have your recipe for the sugar cookies with the swipe of frosting on top, I've shared it with my wife.  Those were some of my favorites.  Although my kids have never met you, they know what "Marge Moon Cookies" are because we bake them every year around Christmas and talk about the memories of you.  We'll continue to make Marge Moon Cookies and honor you when we do each year.

Someone else on this memorial site also mentioned the impact you had on our community.  When I was living in Evanston I can say for sure that all of St. Nicholas knew who you were and treasured your contributions to the Parish.  You and Mr. Moon were a beloved and important part of our world in South Evanston.  What a great place to grow up that was.

I hope that you, Jim, Charleen, and others we have lost from that time are now reunited and you are seeing the positive impact you made on so many people's lives.  Rest in peace Marge, with lots of love always from me and the Hollingshead Family.

Julian

We lived three doors down from Marge and the Moons. When Julian, who played with Scott, lost his Mom to cancer, Marge became his surrogate Mother. She accepted Julian as family and eased the pain and loss of his own mother. Thanks, Marge for your magnanimous love ❤️!


Marge was a fun loving and generous lady who all the Millers across the street loved!!! She was crafty, interested and an amazing person! She along with Jim inspired us with the patience they both had with Steven! What a great family!! RIP Marge! 

Dear Moon Family,
We are so sorry for your loss.  We will always remember Margaret fondly.  She was always kind and inclusive toward us.  Who can forget St. Patrick dinners, table runners and brownies!  She touched a lot of people and will be missed.

Mom,  all my thoughts of you have been running through my mind of all the wonderful times we shared.  Holiday and Family parties,  baking cookies and brownies,  craft shows,  talent shows,  and all the activities you would take me to when I was a kid. And who couldn't forget shopping in the" Forest of the Christmas Trees"
You were a great Mom,  Den leader,  Room Mother and Sunday school teacher.
You have touched so many lives in one lifetime I would be lucky to reach a quarter of that number. Everybody knew Mrs. Moon in South Evanston and would always remember and share funny and loving stories. 
I know you are at peace now and can see all the people that have passed before you. This would make you very happy.

Even though you only met us a couple times, we enjoy hearing stories and looking at picture albums of old memories. We loved to talk to you on the phone and tell you what was going on in VA. May you watch over us and hopefully one day we will meet again. 
We will be sure to comfort poopaw, aka Kevin, as he loves and misses you so much!

Dear Eya (don't ask me why she got this nickname but it made sense to me as a kid and I appreciated her rolling with it) -

Grandma,

I miss you already, but I am very thankful for the memories we made. My favorite memories start with when I was younger, coming to visit you, Papa, and Steve and having access to unlimited cookies, brownies, chips and dip, and sugary drinks. I think you knew we didn’t have these things at home, so you made sure whenever we came that we ate as much as we could to make up for it. Grandma and Grandpa’s house was always the place to be for the best snacks. Another one of my favorite memories was visiting you at the nursing home. One time, we had brought you a McDonalds chocolate shake and you kept mentioning how thick and big the shake was, but you still managed to drink it all. Afterwards, you came up with a poem about leaves falling from the sky that you started singing and dancing to. People started looking out their windows wondering what we were having so much fun laughing about. You always knew how to make me laugh. These are just some of my favorite memories, I am so lucky to have so many more. Say hi to grandpa for me. I look forward to drinking more chocolate shakes with you and hearing more of your poems someday.

Dear Ohdear,
I will always remember our fun shopping trips to Pennsylvania and to the Pottery in Williamsburg, VA and  our visits to Marshall Fields during Christmas. We shopped til we dropped! We had such fun visiting historic sites in the DC area, too. I will miss you but you are at peace now. 
I know you are in heaven with Jim dancing away. I love you.

Od'Dear, you will always be missed and loved. During the move this past year I came across an old box of cassette tapes. Sure enough there was an old recording of Oh'dear reciting a story called "Cinnamon Bear" of which I believe she made up based on a Xmas toy I had when I was a child. It made me happy and sad to at the same time having listened to it. It was something she has made for me to listen to whenever I wanted to. You know, those days before Youtube, FaceTime and no long distance charges on phone lines. We really do have it good these days.

We look forward to playing this same tape for Molly throughout the years to come during the Xmas Holidays. Thank you for all that you did and allowing us over the past few months to FaceTime with you in your room, so that you could finally meet Amanda and Molly face to face.

Dear Ohdear, 

Where do I begin? I enjoyed our visits every other Christmas/Thanksgiving and Summer to Chicago. You were always so excited to watch me Irish dance and visit the Irish store in Old Town Alexandria. My fondest memory is all the photos you would make us take (over and over again) Until I had my own kids I never truly appreciated it. I take soooo many pictures that my kids dread it. Haha! Who would have thought that I would take as many pictures as you did? 

You will be missed, may you Rest In Peace.
