George Fefles

George Fefles, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and coach, passed away in December 2024 at the age of 93. He lived a life characterized by exceptional leadership, unwavering loyalty, and a remarkable ability to bring joy to those around him.

On June 10, 1956, George married his loving wife Elaine Fefles. In the summer of 1962, they joyfully expanded their family by adopting two children, Andrew and Denise, from Greece. Growing up in Chicago, George was deeply connected to his community, particularly St. George Greek Orthodox Church, where he was a dedicated steward throughout his life.

George began his basketball career in high school, becoming All-State and All-City as a senior and was third in the city in scoring. He went on to play and later coach for the NHIBT and AHEPA tournaments with the Ypsilanti team, winning the tournament for 12 successive years. A standout athlete in his own right, he captained the University of Detroit basketball team for two consecutive years – a first in the university's history.

George dedicated 22 years of his professional life to Livonia Bentley High School as a coach and Athletic Director, shaping the lives of countless young athletes. His athletic and coaching accomplishments were later recognized through his induction into the University of Detroit Hall of Fame, the NHIBT Hall of Fame, and the Chicago Public League Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. After moving back to Chicago, he successfully launched a building and maintenance company with his sister, continuing to showcase his entrepreneurial spirit and strong work ethic.

Known for his sharp wit and welcoming personality, George had an extraordinary ability to bring laughter to every occasion. He adored being surrounded by his family and friends, often hosting parties with his late wife Elaine, attending functions within the Greek American community, and frequenting his favorite restaurants. He was fundamentally defined by his generosity. If someone needed help, George would move mountains to assist them. His fierce loyalty was legendary.

George was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Elaine Fefles. He is survived by his son Andrew (Cheryl) Fefles, daughter Denise (Frank) Deamont, and grandchildren Chris, George (Alyssa), and Emme Deamont.

A luncheon will be held at Plateia Restaurant 9860 N. Milwaukee Ave., Des Plaines.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. George Greek Orthodox Church.

George's presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy of kindness, support, and joy will continue to inspire those who knew and loved him.
