He was a towering figure in psychology and Black Studies, Dr. Cross was a brilliant scholar, a generous mentor, and a loving father and friend. His groundbreaking work on Black racial identity, especially his theory of Nigrescence, fundamentally transformed our understanding of race, ethnicity, and culture. His theories have shaped generations of scholars, and his wisdom and generosity continue to resonate across the globe.
Dr. Cross' contributions to psychology are unmatched. His research, deeply rooted in Black Studies and the sociohistorical realities of the Black experience, helped challenge dominant, “damage-centered” narratives in psychology. Instead, he emphasized the strength, complexity, and resilience of Black communities, changing the way we approach racial identity and consciousness.
A recognized leader in the field, Dr. Cross served as president of APA Division 45 and received numerous prestigious awards for his groundbreaking scholarship, including the American Psychological Association’s highest honor: The Lifetime contributions to psychology award in 2022.
Dr. Cross was an inspiring teacher and mentor, devoted to nurturing the next generation of scholars. His influence extended across institutions—from Princeton to Cornell, Penn State to the Graduate Center of CUNY, University of Nevada at Las Vegas, and to his alma mater the University of Denver. His mentorship of countless doctoral students and alumni ensures that his impact will continue to be felt for years to come.
Dr. William E Cross was a prolific writer, jazz aficionado, Indian food fanatic and profoundly loving father. He is survived by his daughter Binta Cross (Denver), his wife Dawn Cross (Denver), his sisters Charlene Walker and Judy Hagen (Las Vegas) and Mary Pat Cross (Chicago). His nieces Leigh Dailey Cross (NYC), Ashleigh Cross St. Peters (Chicago), his grand niece Charlotte Carter St. Peters (Chicago), and Tracey Cvengros (Traverse City).
