Art is remembered by his loving wife of 65 years Louann Wollenweber; his daughter Karen Wollenweber; his son Art Wollenweber (Joli); his son Kurt Wollenweber (Leanne); his daughter-in-law Tracy Hoefke; and preceded in death by his son Marv Wollenweber. He is also remembered by his grandchildren Krista Powell (Wesley); Josh Olearnick (Brynn); Derek Wollenweber (Shaunelle); Mitch Harris and Allie Wollenweber, and great grandchildren Kate Powell, Eli Powell, Avery Olearnick and Leyna Olearnick.
Art Wollenweber was born in Pueblo, Colorado, one of 6 children of Paul and Elizabeth Wollenweber. He attended elementary school and middle school in the Denver Public Schools and then graduated in 1947 from Denver East High School, where he was an excellent student and athlete playing football, basketball, and baseball. He then attended Colorado State College of Education in Greeley (University of Northern Colorado), graduating in 1951. Art was a stellar pitcher during his years in college. He then signed to play professional baseball with the St. Louis Cardinals organization and played minor league baseball for several years for the Cardinals and the White Sox. Art also served his country in the United States Army.
Art then began his professional career in 1956 as a teacher, coach, athletic director, and administrator at Sheridan High School. He was an assistant football, basketball, and wrestling coach for many years. He also was the head baseball coach, where his teams won over 300 games during his tenure. Art retired from Sheridan in 1987. He received many recognitions and awards for his years of service, but his most memorable one was being inducted in 2015 into the Colorado High School Activities Association’s Hall of Fame.
A memorial service and celebration of Art’s life will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at Grace Covenant Church, 10101 W. Mississippi Ave, Lakewood.
