Alton James Meyers, age 82, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 16, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother. Alton was known for his kind heart, unwavering loyalty, and infectious laughter that brought joy to all who knew him.
Born on July 25, 1941, on Avery Island, LA to the late Sylvest and Mae Segura Meyers, and was one of four children.
Alton spent many years employed at the Port of Iberia, where his dedication and hard work were well-respected. Beyond his work, he found great joy in the simple pleasures of life. One of his greatest passions was his beloved shrimp boat, the "Andrea Lea," where he spent countless hours on the water, shrimping and enjoying the sea breeze.
In addition to his maritime pursuits, Alton took pride in meticulously cutting grass, often delighting his grandchildren by giving them rides on his trusty lawn mower. He cherished spending time outdoors, whether on the water or tending to his yard, finding solace and contentment in nature.
Alton had a vibrant social life and loved nothing more than sharing a cup of coffee with friends and engaging in spirited games of Bouree'. His warmth and camaraderie made gatherings with him truly memorable, leaving a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to join him.
Above all else, Alton treasured his family. His greatest joy came from being surrounded by his loved ones, and he created cherished memories with each of them. His love and wisdom will continue to guide and inspire his family and friends.
Those left behind to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 60 years, Judy Bourque Meyers; one son, Jamie L. Meyers and wife Lisa; two daughters, Tammy Meyers Hotard and Nancy M. Colletti and husband Scottie; seven grandchildren, Jeremy Hotard, Brandon Vergenal, Tyler Hotard, Gavin Meyers, Audrey Meyers, Carter Meyers and Beckett Meyers; four great-grandchildren, Isabella Hotard, Ava Hotard, Mila Viator (Hotard) and Lily Vergenal; and one sister, Diana M. Bonin.
Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by one sister, Judy M. Derouen, and one brother, Allen Meyers, Sr.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, at 2:00 pm at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church. Fr. Buddy Breaux will officiate. Inurnment will be held privately at a later date.
A gathering of family and friends will be held Tuesday, June 18, 2024, at Evangeline Funeral Home in Delcambre from 4:00 pm until 9:00 pm, with the Men’s Rosary Group leading the rosary at 6:00 pm. Visiting hours will resume on Wednesday at Evangeline Funeral Home from 8:00 am until 1:30 pm dismissal.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers are Jamie L. Meyers, Tyler Hotard, Brandon Vergenal, Regan Bourque, Jade Ronsonet and Chris Hebert.
