Maxine Miller Broom

Maxine Miller was married to Al Charles Broom in the Spring of 1969. This union blessed them with their son, Jason Benjamin Broom, and daughter, Serena Myischa Broom. Maxine (Grammy) loved being a mom, sister, and auntie to our village. She was a devoted parent to the loves of her life and spent a significant part of her time providing her children with a moral compass in stability, wisdom, grace, respect, kindness, and centering God in everything they do. She embraced her blessings of family and community.

Maxine prioritized providing her children with a safe, secure, and loving home. After which, she decided to put her university degree to work, joined PG&E as a marketing analyst, and with the support and encouragement of a colleague, advanced to a supervisorial role in the Work and Resource Division. She loved her career as an independent, fierce woman, and was devoted to her profession until she decided to retire approximately 30 years later.

Following retirement, she embarked on occasional road trips with her children, Mom and sisters, and hosted or participated in many, many family gatherings with siblings, including occasional surprise cross-country adventures with her ‘Big Brother’ Mackienley. She also spent a considerable amount of time volunteering at the voter polls, local food banks, Bakersfield Senior Center, and providing support to those in need. She was a beacon of hope to so many, and gracefully touched the hearts of those in despair. She had the most magical sparkle in her eye and genuine warmth in her heart for everyone that she met while on this earth. She was also a practical joker with an infectious laugh. She was so loved by us all and we will miss her terribly.

Maxine devoted most of her time to her family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her close-knit circle of friends. She was a lover of vintage cars, including her favorite Gray Cube and the Black 300 Chrysler. She loved Gospel music, and that man -- Smokey Robinson’s “Cruisin”. She loved various genres of literature and music. She even tried her hand at gardening – the jury is still out on that hobby. Undoubtedly, her most prized possession was her precious bible, a collector’s item, possibly from childhood. She is the only person we know who – for decades - read her Bible from Genesis to Revelation the 1st day of every year – up to and including, January 1, 2023. Her culinary talents were learned from childhood and perfected over time. She was known to overcook a few things from time to time. Ok, so she burned some stuff! But, let it be known that she made the absolute best sweet-potato pies, roasted chicken and hot water cornbread, and loved dining out with her grandchildren at every opportunity. She also fancied the Food Network, black and white films and The Andy Griffth Show (yep!), as well as black and white movies. She took joy in sharing our family heritage and legacy, stories of old, and being a witness to many, many miracles, and the power of God, in our family.

Maxine was the kindest, most forgiving person ~ always daring you to embrace giving someone the benefit of the doubt and equally encouraging you to accept your gifts of intuition, wisdom, kindness, forgiveness, adventure, and humbleness. She was a lady of few yet thought-provoking words. Her spirit is reminiscent of a surprisingly light mist of rain randomly appearing and followed by a beam of warm sunshine. Just as she entered the world with purpose so many years ago, she has left behind her gentle footprints to guide the hearts and minds of her children, Serena and Jason, her beautiful grandchildren Bryanna, Lorraine, Nicholas, Brandee, McKinley RayShawn., Joshua, Jonah, Jasmin, Kiarra, and great-grandchildren Taylor, Malaya, Lamarr, La’Maya, Braylon, Braxton, Harmonii, McKinley, Jr., Maliyah , Adreus, Malachi and Harmony.

While these beautiful children and grandchildren suffer the loss of their “Mama” and “Grammy” – rest assured that their uncles and aunties of thirteen, a host of cousins, and extended family will continue to provide you with love, support, and guidance whenever needed.

Maxine is preceded in death by her parents, seven siblings and many family members.

Serving as pallbearers are Jonah Broom, Daryl Daniel, Nicholas Davis Broom, Michael Usochu Espinoza, Paul Vincent Lockett, Bryant Burgess, Bartholomew O. Usochu, and Mackinley Broom Williams. Serving as honorary pallbearers are Jason Miller Broom, Serena Miller Broom, Mackinley Miller , Jessie Miller, Stanley Gene Lockett, Paul Miller, Bill Ray Lockett, Michael Miller, Todd Miller, David Gene Salinas, Bryanna Miller Broom, Kiara Miller Broom and Joe Pickering.

By God’s grace we who still have work to do on this earth will continue to uplift her amazing legacy. We love you, our dearest, sweet, and unforgettable Maxine Miller Broom.
