When she was 16, her family moved to a farm northwest of Chickasha. She attended Meridian High School and graduated in 1939.
She worked in Chickasha a short time before marrying her husband of 52 years, John Jay Cook, in 1942. Together they moved to Midwest City, shortly after the war and raised their two daughters.
Merle was a participating member of First Baptist Church of MWC for as long as her health permitted. She loved to work with Meals On Wheels and serve where she could, making many lifelong friends along the way.
Gone on before her to their heavenly homes are her parents, William and Clara Newberry; husband, John Jay Cook; sister, Marjorie Nicholas; a beloved niece; many nephews, brothers and sisters-in law.
Merle is survived by daughters, Betty Lytle of Mustang, and Kristina Cook of OKC; grandchildren, Kay Lytle of Mustang, and Jeffrey Lytle of Marble Falls, TX; great-grandchildren, Sarah Lytle of Norman, and Max Lytle of Mustang. Merle also leaves behind brothers and sisters-in-law, Don and Nadine McDown of MWC, J.R. and Juanita Cook of Chickasha, and Lois Cook of Chickasha; and a wealth of nieces, nephews and friends.
Merle will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her. Special thanks to the Elara Hospice Group, who provided much support and care to Merle and family.
Funeral service will be at 10 A.M. Monday, January 13, 2020, at Bill Eisenhour Funeral Home. Burial will be at Fairlawn Cemetery in Chickasha, Oklahoma, at 1:30 P.M.
