Glenn E. Troast, age 64, CPA and Mayor of Lighthouse Point, Florida passed away on March 23, 2022, surrounded by family. Born November 6, 1957, in Passaic, New Jersey (where he always said that New Jersey is where the best tomatoes are grown!). He moved to Florida in 1973. He thought he was headed for the beach with the new move but much to his surprise he landed in Clewiston, Florida helping his family run a KOA Campground. He graduated from Clewiston High School in 1975 and then took off for his favorite place on earth, The University of Florida.
BOY SCOUTS
As a young man he still had so much ambition and many accomplishments to complete. He was a distinguished Boy Scout and earned his Eagle Scout designation at the age of 14, being one of the youngest Boy Scouts to ever earn Eagle Designation. One of Glenn’s goals was to shape young men in the Scout program and ultimately get these scouts through their own Eagle projects and obtain their certification. He was instrumental in keeping most of the Eagle Scout projects in Lighthouse Point so residents could see the results of the projects.
Glenn’s personal and best honor for him, just prior to passing, was getting to help and see his son, Evan, complete his Eagle project up at DeGroff Park with the help of all the scouts, Scoutmaster Chris Kolb and the other leaders as well as with the ideas and help of Mr. Roy Rogers who is such a LHP supporter and helps watch over DeGroff Park. Screech owls were living in the park and Evan and the scouts built and erected screech owl boxes which we are happy to report already have their own residents. Glenn was such proud father.
COLLEGE AND HIS WORK HISTORY
Glenn was a very proud graduate of the University of Florida, Fisher School of Accounting, and proudly served and consulted for years with the Board of Accounting and worked to always keep the School of Accounting a prestigious school within the university. He was instrumental in raising money for the school but more importantly his passion was counseling school students to advise them on admission and success within the school of accounting.
SOME OF GLENN’S EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
Glenn was a Florida licensed CPA and a Certified Valuation Analyst. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants, National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts and Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. Glenn also was a very well-respected expert in forensic accounting and loved the challenge of the lawsuits. He was admired by clients, accountants, lawyers, and judges.
POST COLLEGE LIFE
After Glenn graduated UF, he married his first wife Denise who together had a beautiful and now very successful daughter, Meaghan. Now, we don’t need to tell you about the bond between a daughter and father, but we promise you it is real, and it is strong. Glenn, Meaghan and Denise would travel everywhere with their van full of Labrador Retrievers. They bred and showed Labs everywhere and won many honors both in show and in their breeding.
Sadly, Meaghan’s Mom passed away at a young age which made Glenn and Meaghan grow even stronger together. When Marjorie met Glenn a couple of years after Denise’s death, she was not sure if she could ever fit in with that father/daughter bond, but again God made a way and Marjorie, and Meaghan are thick as thieves and love each other dearly. Meaghan and her husband Joe have also gave Glenn and Marjorie the sweetest grandson ever (Vincent)! Yes, he will be spoiled by Marjorie. We will always keep his grandpa front and center with photos and stories. We have plenty of stories of Glenn, but we may have to wait until he is a little older to tell some of those stories. The big thing for Glenn and Meaghan were Gator games. They began a tradition to go to opening weekend and homecoming games and when Meaghan was older, the FSU v FL game and UGA v FL game. This tradition continued with Evan. Glenn was a BullGator until a few years after Meaghan graduated. Meaghan always had good seats and never had to sit in the hot Gator side of the stadium!
WHERE DID HE GET ALL HIS KNOWLEDGE?
Glenn had extensive experience serving both public and private companies in a multitude of industries including healthcare, manufacturing, wholesale and distribution, and service companies. He also has significant experience in financial and transactional related valuation matters and has also assisted numerous companies in both initial and secondary public offerings and private equity placements. Glenn has coordinated business purchases and sale transactions cumulatively totaling more than five billion dollars.
While with Coopers & Lybrand, Glenn frequently served as an instructor at the annual national tax partner and manager tax conference on a wide variety of topics including S Corporations, Mergers & Acquisitions and Due Diligence matters. He also served as a frequent instructor at many national Coopers & Lybrand staff courses on a large array of business and tax topics. Additionally, Glenn authored and presented several courses for the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants and Tax Executives Institute on topics such as S Corporation Legislative Changes, Mergers Reorganizations & Acquisitions and Family Business Transfers. Furthermore, he has instructed the senior management of numerous companies on business acquisition techniques.
He eventually opened his own successful company with his partner, Jan Nouss called TN Partners. He took pride in each transaction which was conducted.
THE POLITICAL YEARS
Despite being as busy as he was with work, family and other side projects, Glenn decided that with his financial and business background he had much to offer the city and decided to throw his hat into LHP politics. Glenn was very passionate about Lighthouse Point and always felt he had a way to help. He started on the Code Enforcement Board, then served as Commissioner and ultimately made his way to Mayor. He was in his third term as Mayor when God decided he needed him upstairs. Glenn was happy to serve his Lord, we just wish God could have waited just a tad bit longer. We all know, we are not in charge of God’s plan for us in our earthy body, we must let God have all our trust and quite honestly, we must learn to live with his decisions. We like to think he is helping God through a difficult tax season in Heaven!!!
IMPROVING LIGHTHOUSE POINT
Glenn, the Commission, and numerous others were able to obtain a $16M bond to allow the city of LHP to make tremendous and long overdue improvements to all the public works buildings. The LHP Fire Station is now a wonderful building on Sample Drive which beautifully welcomes you into our lovely city. He wanted to see all the bond projects completed but just ran out of time, however, he was so proud of how they were turning out.
TAKING IT TO THE STREETS
After all this work, Glenn and his wife Marjorie decided it was time to take a break and travel a bit and they were fortunate to purchase a 35-foot Class A Motorhome which they named the “Whippet Good” after their whippet dogs. Even while sick, Glenn, Marjorie, Evan, and the Whippets were able to travel over 60% of the US states and got to explore state and national parks, the Pacific Northwest and a helicopter ride down and into the Grand Canyon. We also did a Baltic cruise and spent time in Copenhagen, Denmark with our adopted Danish family. Glenn simply loved to travel and make memories.
Glenn is survived by his wife Marjorie, son Evan, daughter Meaghan (Joe) and grandson Vincent. He is also survived by his parents Rin and Kathleen Troast, in addition to siblings Marianne Duke (John), Laura Schramm (Bernard), Kathy Nestor (Bo), Mark Troast (Deborah) along with numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by in-laws Dana and Jennifer Evans and their two children.
Services will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2022, at 12 noon at St Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 2700 NE 36th St, Lighthouse Point, Florida. Glenn was a lifelong gator fan. If you feel so inspired, wear your most festive Gator attire. There will be a gator tailgate party to be held in Glenn’s honor in the parish hall immediately after services are completed.
