Steve was the son of Merton and Nancy (Cunefare) Crichton of Centerville. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Amber Crichton in 2009. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Ann Riegle Crichton, twin sons Noah and Steven (Neil) Crichton Jr., and special stepdaughter, Rachel Shields (Zachery Shepherd), sister and brother-in-law, Sharon and Matt Bond, nephew, Ben Bond, of Bellbrook, and special cat friend, Domino who was a particular comfort during the worst days of his cancer treatment.
His education included degrees in Metallurgy and Materials Science from Case Western Reserve University. He received an M.S. and a Ph.D. in Materials Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and then spent several years as a research engineer in the Cleveland area.
He enjoyed a second career as an educator. He moved to Dayton to work for Dayton Public Schools in 2005 and retired in 2022. He was able to teach everything from Algebra I to Calculus but spent most of his time teaching Geometry. He was well-loved and respected by students and colleagues alike.
Steve was an avid sports fan, including high school football and basketball, and he knew all the rules and regulations for most sports. His professional team was the Pittsburgh Steelers. He loved to travel and enjoyed a Mediterranean cruise with Ann in September 2023. He was a huge fan of amusement parks and enjoyed riding roller coasters-- the higher and faster, the better. He was an accomplished musician, playing piano, clarinet and saxophone. He was a member of the Promise Choir and Orchestra when he lived in Cleveland.
Colleagues, friends and family have described Steve as brilliant, genuine, kind and dedicated. He made friends easily and his family was always his top priority. He will be greatly missed.
