Pastor Steve went into the loving arms of His Savior on December 16, 2024, at Kettering Hospital main campus. Most people knew him as “Stew” and he never met a stranger he did not like. In life, he was a loving father, husband, and Pastor and an amazing cook. He was born on February 3, 1959. His father being a minister, they moved around to various cities in Indiana where he attended elementary and middle school. Eventually, they moved to Evansville, IN where he attended and graduated from Harrison High School. In his early 20’s he worked in the dietary department at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, IN for 14 years. This is where he eventually met his future wife, Karen Ann Barron of Evansville, IN. On May 8, 1982, Karen and Steve were married. He then went to work at Tristate Rehab Hospital in Evansville, IN for 2 years. He also served on the worship team and Children’s ministry at Trinity Wesleyan Church in Evansville, IN and Diamond Valley Nazarene Church in Evansville, IN. It was during this time that Steve started studying for the ministry. One of his passions was working as a radio announcer. He worked at WVHI AM 1330 in Evansville, IN and WMPI Country Radio in Scottsburg, IN. In 2000, he was ordained as a minister in the Wesleyan Church at the District Campgrounds in Orleans, IN. He pastored at Scottsburg Wesleyan Church in Scottsburg, IN from 1998-2002. After serving as Pastor there, he went to help serve at North Vernon Wesleyan Church under the leadership of Pastor Jim Terry for 1 year. In 2003, he and his family moved to Sidney, OH, where he pastored at Sidney Wesleyan Church for 14 years. After which, he stayed in Sidney, OH and attended Pathway Open Bible Church in Sidney, OH, where he was able to preach and serve there under the leadership of Pastor Matt Thomas. He and his wife then moved to West Carrollton, OH, where he pastored at Cornerstone Wesleyan Church for 6 years. After serving there, he and his wife moved to Miamisburg, OH and attended Assurance Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents William L. Chapman and Evelyn R. Chapman (O’Dell), sister-in-law Linda Chapman (Barron), and brother-in-law Thomas Barron of Evansville, IN. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Karen A. Chapman (Barron), Laura Chapman of Piqua, OH and Christopher Chapman of Sidney, OH. He is also survived by his brother William (Bob) Chapman and sister-in-law Jeryl Chapman (Blesdoe) of Scottsburg, IN, and John Hudspeth (Stepson) of Scottsburg, IN. Nephew: Jon Chapman and Deneisha Chapman (Parrish) of Jeffersonville, IN, Jonathon Junior (JJ), and Kimora Chapman of Jeffersonville, IN and Faithe Croom (French) (Stepdaughter). A brother-in-law: Stephen Barron and Connie Johnson of Griffin, IN and Sister-in-Law Mary Barron of Evansville, IN. Nephew and Niece by marriage: Jennifer Tosti (Young) of Evansville, IN and Brian Young.
Visitation will be on Friday, December 27, 2024, at Tobias Funeral Home (Beavercreek Chapel) 3970 Dayton-Xenia Rd, Dayton, OH, 45432. Funeral Services will be held at Assurance Baptist Church 777 E. Trotwood Blvd, Dayton, OH 45426 on Saturday, December 28 at 10A. Funeral services will be led by Pastor Bryson Thompson and other selected guest speakers. There will be no graveside service. Family and friends are welcome to join if they are able after the service for a carry-in dinner provided by the church.
The Chapman Family (Karen, Laura, and Chris) would like to thank the nurses, doctors, and staff at Kettering Hospital Main Campus for all their love and care they provided to their father and husband while he stayed there recovering from heart surgery last year and other surgeries this year.
