Mark was very intelligent, a lover of nature, a storyteller and many other things.  However what  really impressed me about Mark was that he was kind.  Cynthia Smith

It’s been said our fleeting lives on this spinning blue-white planet can serve as either a warning or an example.  Mark’s life was a glorious, triumphant example.  Despite the ever-present threat of (physical) death casting a pall over it, he unfailingly displayed resolute courage and optimism.  His extraordinary intelligence drove him to seek answers to daily questions prompted by his endless curiosity and love of learning.  Mark was the consummate problem-solver.  He never viewed some problem as an insurmountable obstacle, but rather, just a challenge with the answer awaiting discovery.

Earl Nightengale once likened our lives to a canvas—with each person we get to know “adding a dab of paint to that canvas.”  Mark significantly enhanced the beauty and depth of all lives (and canvases) that he touched.  Surely the winged angels accompanying his spirit to heaven see Mark’s canvas as a grand masterpiece and stellar example of how to live in the face of constant adversity. 

I’ll greatly miss my brother-in-law (and true spiritual brother).  He was a trusted friend, the ideal fishing buddy, fellow Buckeyes football aficionado, and devoted loving husband to my sister, Teri.  Rest in peace Mark—and may God share fantastic fishing holes up there for you to endlessly explore with my Dad, your Dad … (undoubtedly catch and release).

I was lucky enough to grow up calling Teri and Mark my “Aunt” and “Uncle.” My parents have been friends with the Youngs forever and I had the benefit of growing up learning from and spending time with them. They came over on the weekends for movie nights, we camped together, they saw me off to my high school dances, and they cheered me on at high school and college graduations. 

Uncle Mark also always encouraged my dreams, especially those involving showing and owning horses. He loved riding horses growing up and enjoyed the fact that I love them too. In this photo, he and Aunt Teri came to meet my horse, Luna, shortly after I brought her home. 

One of my very favorite things about Uncle Mark was that he was a natural and entertaining storyteller. He found the joy in the little things and found humor even in the darkest times. He had a smile that always invited you to join in on the fun. 

I still can’t really comprehend that he has passed away, but I know that he has found peace. I am sure we will meet again one day. Rest in Peace, Uncle Mark. I love you. ❤️

My brother-in-law Mark had a genuine zest for life.  He was an inspiration to All in light of his on-going health struggles.  He loved being active outdoors in God’s country.  He loved his wife Teri (my sister) so that we (the Smith family) would never have to worry about her.  We knew she had married a man of Christian faith who had accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.  He had the ability to keep Teri happy even in the face of all his health issues throughout his life without complaint.

Mark always tried to keep a sense of humor in the face of adversity.  He had a natural curiosity and innate ability to “fix” things.  He was always my first “go to” for any camper, tech or home projects.  I knew if I could fix something half as well as him, I had likely been successful.  He set the bar high.  Mark loved watching sports and especially rooting for the Buckeyes.  He loved his pets Bear Jr., Mitzy and my dog Ralphie among others.  Mark was always very devoted to his friends and family throughout his life.  I will personally miss him very dearly but know that I will see him again someday in heaven.

We are so sad to hear about Mark!  He was a great guy!  It was good that Mark and Teri had time to travel together and create special memories.  Our Uncle Joe would say that we touch in time.

Donna has been friends with Teri since second grade and Mark came into the picture 47 years ago! Mark was more than just a friend…he and Teri are family. From the early days, through all the changes life brought, he remained the same at heart: loyal, funny, kind, and full of quiet strength. We shared countless memories—some joyful, some challenging—but we always faced them together.

The way he faced his illness was inspiring to all who knew his story. He never let cancer overwhelm him and fought it over 40 years!

Saying goodbye doesn’t mean letting go of what Mark was to us. His memory lives on in the stories we tell and the fun we had. Though he may no longer be with us, he remains an integral part of our lives. We will miss him every day, but will carry on supporting Teri and ensuring all Mark would want us to do is accomplished.
