Joseph Emmit Tyler, beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather, passed away at age 90 on Thursday, March 7, 2024 after a brief illness.
He was born in Waukegan, Illinois on October 8, 1933 to Carolyn (Althizar) Tyler and Joseph E. Tyler. Sr. As a young man, he developed a lifelong fascination with airplanes, earning a pilot’s license at 16. His love of airplanes took him all over the world.
After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served honorably in Korea and Vietnam. His commendations include the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal w/ 1 Bronze Service Star.
After retiring from active duty he spent a second career as crew chief for the 4950th Test Wing at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. He later volunteered with the Wright B Flyer organization building replicas of the original Wright B Flyer and accompanying aircraft to various air shows. He could identify any aircraft from any era and country of origin. He had a deep interest in military history and photography. He was an animal lover. He was devoted to his family.
He was predeceased by his first wife Dorothy J. Tyler, his beloved daughter Jennifer Lynn Tyler, his second wife Lottie Tyler and his sister Maxine (Tyler) Richardson.
He is survived by three children, Jacqueline Tyler Williams of Columbus, Ohio, Joseph Emmit Tyler III of Chicago, Illinois, and Jeffrey Scot (Kay) Tyler of Springfield, Ohio. He is survived by five grandchildren, Justin M. (Leena) Williams of San Bruno, California, Jerrid T. (Holly) Williams of Dublin, Ohio, Jessica (Justin) Schele of Cincinnati, Ohio, Kaitlyn Tyler of Springfield, Ohio and Jordan (Elizabeth) Tyler of Columbus, Ohio. He is also survived by three great grandchildren, Rowan, Sonia and Avery Williams.
His interment will be held on April 4 at 1:00 pm at Dayton National Cemetery. A memorial service will take place on April 6th at 10:30 am at Dayton Korean Grace Church.
