I knew Jack because I am a friend of Jack's brother, Bill. Jack was always a pleasure to be around, so positive, always a smile, and seemed to truly care about others. I was Jack's best friend growing up.  We took canoe trips, camped out, played basketball, studied Latin, pruned Christmas trees up in Michigan.  We went to high school together (Chaminade) and college together (Notre Dame) and rode back and forth between Dayton and South Bend.  I was best man at Jack and Roseanne's wedding.

After Rosie died, Jack and I  drifted apart.  I don't know why.  Lately, though, we commiserated over younger brother's Jim's death and made plans to hook up at a college reunion.  We also had an open-ended plan to hook up in Dayton of the months or years.

Jack was  hard worker but he also had a secret side.  He could be hilarious.  He also was quite the storyteller.  He loved his two dithers (Julie and Karen) very much.

I had no idea Jack was ill.  I thought he would be around for a long long time. He lived the outdoors. His death saddens me very very much.

I was informed today of Jack's death by a Notre Dame classmate and I want to extend my condolences to his family and close friends. Jack and I were roommates in 429 Kennan Hall during our first year at Notre Dame and it was the first time I had been away from home and Jack was a great friend during the transition to college life. I'll always remember those days with great fondness. It is my hope that the life and love that the family shared with Jack all these years will sustain you all during this difficult time.

I had the great pleasure of knowing Jack in high school. While I did not maintain contact with him after that era, I still have very fond memories of Christmas tree pruning, a canoe trip, and poker parties. I write these words as a simple testimony about my brother-in-law and my friend Jack--he was a true Man's man. No, not in terms of mountains climbed, but in terms of the most important things; values and behavior! What his parents, Holy Angels, Chaminade and Notre Dame taught, Jack internalized!

His God, family, friends, neighbors and job responsibility came first, in that order. His values and behavior are just what is missing in today's bigger society.

The next generation could do no better than to model Jack's behavior. Review the wonderful "celebration of life" slideshow. You are struck by his confident, warm smile as he focuses on family at the holidays and in celebration of education, simple hobbies with brothers, enjoying outdoor beauty, and detailing stories of history and friends. 

For those of us marry-ins to the Barstow family, Jack provided a strong, warm welcome; "anything I can get you"? Can't think of a more thoughtful, loyal or consistent brother, husband, father, grandfather, worker, volunteer or supporter for all occasions! He was what we all should desire to be!

So very sad to hear this. May you feel comfort with your family and in the knowledge that he is in the presence of our Lord, and those loved ones who have gone before him. 

Hoping you will continue to build wonderful memories at Bear Lake and may you find peace in its calm waters.

I am so sorry to hear about Jack's passing.  He and I shared Notre Dame as our Alma Mater, and Jack lived the values Notre Dame stands for.  He was very intelligent and respectful to all he encountered.  Most of all though, he was dedicated to service and was able to combine his love of history with service at Carillon Park and the Police Historical Society.  He was a model for others to aspire to in both how to live life and how to give back to others.  Our condolences to Rose, Karen, Julie, and their families.  You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Jack was a good friend and great neighbor (40 years ago on Golden Gate Drive)

Jack was a friend, neighbor, business associate, realator and all around good guy.   He will be missed by the whole Lindeman Family

We are all saddened at the news that we have lost a special person.  Friend, neighbor, business associate and real estate consultant.  Jack was a true gentleman and a wonderful guy.   He will be missed by the entire Lindeman family.

Many staff members and volunteers at Dayton History will miss Jack who served as a volunteer historical interpreter/guide for 7 years. Jack loved sharing the history of Dayton, the Wright Brothers, Hawthorn Hill home of the Wright family, and many other interesting facts and stories with visitors to Carillon Historical Park.
