The Reverend H. Alvin Kuhn, 87, passed away peacefully in the early morning of Sunday, June 9, 2013 at Bethany Village in Centerville, Ohio. Al was born June 11, 1925 in Lincoln County, North Carolina to Harvey Alvin and Elizabeth Noe Kuhn.
After completing high school in Newton, NC, Al enlisted in the army and served as a scout in World War II. He was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge and was medically discharged from service. He attended Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, NC, where he met Eva Jean Foltz of Shenandoah, VA, and in August of 1949, he and Jean began a wonderful marriage of nearly 64 years.
After college, Al followed his calling to ministry and attended the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia, PA. He served as the pastor of congregations in Sanford, NC; McLean, VA; Wilmington, DE; Alexandria, VA and Hampton, VA. He also served four years with the Lutheran Church in America's Commission on Evangelism in Southeast PA.
In 1990, Al and Jean retired to Williamsburg where they were active members of St. Stephen Lutheran Church. Al enjoyed teaching adult Sunday School classes, and participating, both as student and teacher, in the continuing education classes of the Christopher Wren Society. He enjoyed reading, woodworking, traveling, listening to classical music and napping with his daily newspaper. He was a humble and gentle man with an inquisitive mind who delighted in telling humorous stories.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a younger brother, Isaac Kuhn. He is survived by his two sisters, Sue Kuhn Moorefield of Fredericksburg, VA and Betsy Kuhn Brittain of Cary, NC, his wife, Jean, their two daughters, Brenda Kuhn (Andrew Yale) of Ithaca, NY, and Pamela (Dean) Eklund of Beavercreek, OH and grandchildren Jesse (Kristen) Pappas, Jacob Yale, Elisabeth Eklund and Emily Eklund.
A memorial service will be held July 27 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Stephen Lutheran Church, 612 Jamestown Road, Williamsburg.
