VAN WINKLE, Edythe “Edie”, age 95, passed away peacefully at the Carlyle House of Kettering, Tuesday, October 8, 2019. Edie was born May 24, 1924, in Newark, Ohio to the late Isaac and Iva (Mason) Myers. She was one of eleven children: Howard, Warren, Vera, Ralph, Harry, Jean, Marian, (Edie), Irma, Marjorie Lou, and Dorothea. She was a 1942 graduate of Newark High School and worked as a secretary to the Vice President of B&O Railroad in Newark. In 1951 she moved to Dayton, Ohio with her husband, and began work as a secretary for the Vice President of Standard Register. She was a member of the Dayton Women’s Club and Christ United Methodist Church. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and supported his efforts with the Rotary and American Business Club.
Edie enjoyed sewing, re-upholstering, finding treasures at garage/estate sales, and sharing information on healthy eating habits and vitamins with everyone she met. Dick and Edie made lifetime friends with whom they’d play cards, travel, go to the races and enjoy “staying young” together. She had a quick wit, good sense of humor, and loved to read. She will be remembered for her sense of fashion and poise, yet, she never hesitated to actively play with her grandkids (rumor has it, she demonstrated how to use a pogo stick when she was 70). Edie always took time to cheer on her grandkids at swim meets, volleyball, football, basketball, and baseball games. Yes, she was the perfectly coiffed grandma in the stands looking stunning in her black leather pants.
Edie is preceded in death by her loving husband of 60 years Max Richard “Dick” Van Winkle. She is survived by children; son Douglas (Roberta) Van Winkle, and daughter Marilyn (Jeff) Yoss, grandchildren; Don (Chrissy)Van Winkle, Michael Van Winkle, Christina (Jake) Nelson, and Ben Yoss, sister-in-law Jayne Van Winkle, brother-in-law Robert “Bob” Buchanan, numerous nieces and nephews and a host of extended family. The Van Winkle family would like to thank the staff at the Carlyle House in Kettering for their loving tender care of Edie these past 6 years. Memorial service to be held 3:00PM Saturday, October 19, 2019 at the TOBIAS FUNERAL HOME- Far Hills Chapel. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the memorial service. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Edie's memory to The Hospice of Dayton 324 Wilmington Ave. Dayton, Ohio 45420. Condolences can be expressed to the family at tobiasfuneralhome.com.
