Dorothy Joan M. Schnabel was called home to be with the Lord on September 21, 2023, in Annapolis, MD, at the age of 90. Joan was the youngest daughter of the late Frank Mulcahy and Margaret Purcell Mulcahy, respectively a homebuilder and homemaker in South Orange, New Jersey. She was also predeceased by her three brothers, Joseph Mulcahy, Frank Mulcahy Jr., and James Mulcahy, and one sister, Mary Riordan. After graduating from the College of St. Elizabeth with a business management degree in 1954, Joan moved to Washington DC to work for the conference and event management company Courtesy Associates. While in Washington, Joan met James Schnabel, a civil engineer and later the founder of Schnabel Engineering Associates. They married in 1960, moved to Bethesda, MD, and raised a family. From the 1960s until a few years before her death, Joan was active in numerous religious and charitable organizations. After surviving a bout with cancer in her late 40s, Joan dedicated her life to helping others, especially the less fortunate. She enjoyed traveling with her husband of 63 years; spending time with her four children and six grandchildren; and playing piano, singing, or playing cards with family. Joan remained healthy and active in her charitable endeavors well into her 80s while residing in Sherwood Forest, MD. Left to cherish her memory are her husband James, her four children James Jr., Brian, Eileen (Chad) and John (Kasy), and her grandchildren Courtney, David, Kane, Caden, Declan and Keller. Funeral visitation is planned for Wednesday, September 27 at Hardesty Funeral Home, Annapolis MD from 10:00 AM-12:00 PM followed by a graveside service and burial at Lakemont Memorial Gardens at 1:00 PM. Celebration of Life will be immediately following the interment at Lakemont Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a charitable contribution in Joan's name to Open Doors, or Teen Challenge, both organizations she served and was passionate about.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.lakemontmemorialgardens.com for the Schnabel family.
