Barbara was born on October 29, 1946, in Washington, D.C., to the late Eleanor Louise Rhoades and Calvin Wesley Rhoades. She was the first child born into this union. She spent most of her early years on the farm with her grandparents in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
Barbara was educated through the District of Columbia public school system and during this time she met the love of her life, James Edward Green, also known as Lil Butch, in the 9th grade cooking class. He pursued her until she had no other choice but to be his girlfriend, throughout the rest of her school years. They later married on March 12, 1965; they spent more than four decades of bliss together. From this union, Bonita Marie (Bonnie) and James Edward Green, Jr. (Jimmy) were born.
Barbara began her career as a salesclerk and worked her way up to being a store buyer with Lane Bryant. When that came to an end, she then became the store manager of The Answer and later the manager of Plus Sizes at the Iverson Mall location.
One of her favorite holidays was Christmas because she truly enjoyed cooking for her entire family and loved watching her children and grandchildren’s excitement of opening presents. She enjoyed spoiling her family, especially around the holidays. Barbara loved her family and truly enjoyed spending time with them. Her grandchildren along with their friends all affectionately called her “Nana”.
She is preceded in death by her husband, James E. Green, Sr.; her mother, Eleanor L. Rhoades; mother-in-law, Rena Lee Green; father-in-law, Leroy Green, Sr.; brother-in-law, Robert Lee Green, Sr. (Bob); sisters-in-law, Rita, Rita Ann and Elaine Pearson.
