A graveside service will be held at a later date at the National Cemetery, Rock Island.
Steve was born on November 26, 1948, the son of Elmer and Veronica (Haley) Winter in St. Paul, MN. He joined the Army in 1968 and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant in 1971. He received medals of National Defense and Sharpshooter M-14. After the service he joined the Police Academy and later became a DNR officer. He got his CDL and became a truck driver for many years, retiring from Murray’s Trucking, Davenport. Steve enjoyed fishing, hunting, trapping, camping, birdwatching, and anything to do with nature. He was a man of knowledge. If you couldn’t find the answer you could always turn to Steve and get the right one.
Survivors include brothers, Tom (Kay) Winter, Portage, WI, and Jim (Katie) Winter, of Great Falls, MT; brother-in-law Jim(Ralph) Patch, Wolf Point, MT; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends, Jerry (Polly) Mangels and Sheri Schaefer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Robert and sister, Sue Patch.
A special thank you is extended to his hospice nurse Liz.
A Fisherman’s Prayer
God, grant that I may live to fish until my dying day.
And when my final case is made, I then most humbly pray.
When in the Lord’s safe landing net,
I’m peacefully asleep,
That in his mercy, I be judged as good enough to keep.
