Phyllis Maxine (Morris) Orr was born June 30th, 1928, in Indianola, IA, to Ralph and Jessie Morris. She was one of 12 children and graduated from Indianola High School in 1946 where she was a majorette for the marching band. Shortly after graduation she married Richard “Dick” Orr on October 26th, 1946.
Phyllis was energetic and loving to her children, neighbors, extended family, and many others. Her memories of growing up poor resulted in helping others at every opportunity while teaching her children to give without “expecting anything in return”.
She welcomed neighbors, family, and kids into the family’s home with a smile, warmth and sense of humor and possessed that rare quality of being able to laugh at herself.
A lifelong Iowa Hawkeye fan, she was nicknamed “The Hawk” and wrote to various coaches over the years. She cherished the personal responses received from Lute Olsen, Tom Davis, Hayden Fry, and Kirk Ferentz.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, Richard “Dick” Orr; son, James “Jim” Orr; and siblings Eleanor, Robert, Virginia, Margaret, Helen, Howard, Oma, Max, and Francis. She is survived by her daughter, Jo; son, John; grandchildren, Ryan (Amy), Brett, (Victoria) and Brittany (Omar); great-grandchildren, Audrey, Keegan, Kodi, and Nico; and sister-in-law Barbara (Morris) Armstrong.
Family and friends are invited to a visitation on Sunday, October 20th, 2024, from 1-4 PM at Weerts Funeral Home in Davenport, IA. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Community Baptist Church in Andalusia, IL.
She will be laid to rest alongside her husband Richard at a private ceremony at the Rock Island Arsenal National Cemetery on Monday, October 21st, 2024.
