Orville J. Thompson, 79, of Davenport, Iowa; passed away Saturday, May 2, 2020 at his home with his wife by his side. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Memorials in Orville’s name may be made to a charity of choice.
Orville was born September 26, 1940 to Orville and Alma Thompson in Davenport, Iowa. He graduated from Davenport High School in 1958; during high school, he discovered his love of gymnastics and trained at North West Turners. His passion for gymnastics earned him a scholarship to Western Illinois University. He later transferred to the University of Northern Iowa and got his Masters Degree in Special Education from Marrycrest College. Orville started his teaching career in Vinton, Iowa at the Iowa School for the Blind. He moved back to Davenport and taught at Taylor School and he also worked with those who were visually impaired; he retired in 1994. Following his wife, Linda’s retirement, they spent several winters in Florida. Orville loved playing all kinds of sports and spending time outside. He could often be found playing racket ball, tennis, golf, skiing, hiking, running, or just being with his dear friends. He was an artist by hobby and won ribbons at the CASI Art contests for his watercolor paintings.
Orville is survived by his wife of 39 years, Linda; his daughter Barbara Jean; step-daughter Kim Weissenburger-Lonie; grandchildren Oscar and Harper; and his brother Michael (Lynne). He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Jimmy, George, and Richard.
