Mary was born on March 3, 1950 in Green Bay, Wisconsin to Jerry and Mary Ruth Curran. Her love of music started early as her mother was an opera major which led to Mary following in her same footsteps. She was both a talented pianist and singer and graduated from St Norbert’s College with a Bachelor’s in Music. This led her to many great opportunities such as singing at Vince Lombardi’s public funeral in Green Bay as well as USO Tours in Panama, Puerto Rico and Cuba. Mary would go on to be a music teacher in Denver, Peoria and Milwaukee as she loved to teach music to children.
She then took that passion to a new field…being creative director for a regional advertising agency in Green Bay. She starred and produced in many local commercials and showed her array of talent both in front of and behind the camera. She also continued her music passion by starring in many musicals/plays both in Wisconsin as well as when she moved to Davenport, IA in 1988.
After a successful advertising and sales career, she took on a new challenge in 2000 and opened up a franchise of her brother’s trucking company, Straight Shot Express. She operated a successful business for 24 years as Founder and President. She took so much pride in her business and her employees were always dedicated to her passion and love for the industry.
During this time, she kept her passion for music close to home as she performed her musical and comedy show in many locations. From the Red Crow and Oakwood Country Club to her prestigious basement bar she created and named it Mary’s Place. Her personal piano bar shined a huge neon sign that could seen from the street and was full of costumes, a light show, disco ball, instruments, a full stage, a Clavinova and microphones where she sang her heart out. She held more than 50 people at Mary’s Place for her 60th birthday where laughs and applause were heard for miles.
Mary knew no strangers in her lifetime…she didn’t demand attention, she commanded it. A light would shine on any room she walked into (preferably a spotlight) and she left with a new gaggle of friends every single time. She loved playing cards and Euchre with her friends, employees and children even though she gave them no mercy when trying to beat them all. She was an avid golfer and loved the Green Bay Packers! The only skill she did not master was her dancing skills as her two children would beat Mary and her brother, Pat each year in the annual Christmas Curran Sibling dance competition (yes there is video).
Mary’s ultimate passion was being a mother. Mary will be deeply missed by her beloved children, Molly Feeney and Joseph Feeney who will always be wrapped in their mother’s love. She will also be missed by her nieces and nephews Monika (Joe) Barnes, Nicholas (Brittany) Curran, Patrick (Carrie) Curran and Timothy Curran. She also adored her grandnieces and nephews, Abigail and Michael Barnes and Evelyn and James Curran. Family was the most important thing to Mary and if you weren’t family, she would absolutely make you feel like you were.
Our family would be remiss in not deeply expressing a special thank you to Mary’s devoted and cherished staff at Straight Shot Express in whom Mary always spoke so proudly of.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Jerry and Mary Ruth Curran (Fitzgerald), brothers Michael and Patrick Curran and sister-in-law Katherine Curran.
