Marvin was born August 25,1943 in Park River, ND, the son of Edward and Loretta (Solberg) Ackerland.
Marvin enlisted in the United States Army in 1960, at the age of 17. He proudly served his country for three years until September 1963.
On October 22,1966, Marvin married JoAnn Lindemann. They were blessed with three daughters, Michelle, Monica and Mary. Marvin and JoAnn were married for 38 years until JoAnn lost her long battle with cancer on August 7, 2005.
Marvin retired in 2006 after working at JI Case Company for 23 years and 17 years at Alcoa Davenport Works. He was also a real estate broker.
On September 2, 2006, Marvin married Eileen Hoeg. They recently celebrated their 17th wedding anniversary and enjoyed a surprise 80th birthday party for Marvin. Through his marriage to Eileen, Marvin gained a stepson, Michael Hoeg of Davenport, IA.
“Grandpa Marvin” was exceptionally proud of his granddaughter from VA and his two grandsons, Aiden and Alex Hoeg from Davenport, IA. They were “beyond special” to him and he loved making them laugh.
Marvin was an avid reader and enjoyed weekly visits to all of the Quad City libraries. His hobbies included watching Wheel of Fortune, playing Sudoku, Wordle and challenging brain teaser puzzles. Marvin also loved adventurous activities and pursuits. He and Eileen traveled extensively, visiting 35 countries around the world. He once participated in a breathtaking bridge climb over the Sydney Harbor Bridge in Australia.
Everyone who knew Marvin will remember his quick wit, his sense of humor, his selflessness, his love for his family, and his kind words.
He is survived by his wife, Eileen Ackerland, three daughters, Michelle Ackerland, IL, Monica (Dan) Vuksanovich, TX, Mary Ackerland-Bell (Christopher), VA and stepson, Michael (Mary Anne) Hoeg, IA. He is also survived by his brother, Jerome Ackerland, ND and sisters, Eileen (Dean) Stodgell, IN, Karen (Dave) Lizakowski, IA and Yvonne Combs, IN, his three grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Loretta Ackerland, baby sister, Darlene Ackerland, brother, Robert Ackerland, and sisters, Rita Johnson, Shirley Alman and Evelyn Pullen.
Marvin will be honored with a memorial service on Saturday October 7, at 10:00am at The Runge Mortuary, 838 E. Kimberly RD., Davenport, IA. A private interment will take place in Grand Mound, IA. following the memorial service.
In lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be made to the Moline Public Library or the River Bend Food Pantry.
