Larry was born on May 25, 1942 in Wichita, Kansas, and later lived in Oregon and Utah with his fun-loving and hardworking family. He enjoyed telling stories about teasing his beautiful older sisters, Carol and Viv, and the shenanigans of his little brother Gary. He loved his horse, Dixie, and riding with his dad, Larry Sr. His mother Mary was a loving constant in his life, the rock of an active family.
In 1964, Larry graduated with a degree in Psychology from Weber University in Ogden, Utah. Shortly afterward, he married the love of his life, Susan Mack, in Moab, Utah. Their two daughters, Sherry and Julie, arrived in the next two years.
Larry’s long career in retail management (W. T. Grant, Zayre, Venture) took his family on adventures from coast to coast. In each place they lived (Nevada, California, Rhode Island, Indiana, Missouri, and Iowa), Larry’s first objective was to “hop in the car” and go exploring. An avid outdoorsman, Larry was happiest when he was camping, hiking, fishing, canoeing, or traveling with his three girls and extended family.
Larry will be remembered by all who knew him as a cheerful, generous man who always wore a smile and loved to laugh. His family came first, and despite working long hours during his career, he never failed to make time for his daughters and grandchildren, who share countless happy memories of their “Boompa.” He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Davenport for more than 35 years, and enjoyed many hours of service and fellowship with his church family.
Above all, Larry was a devoted husband to Susan for 59 years. She was his North Star, and his deep love for her was true and steadfast until the end. Together they lived a long, fulfilling life, sustained by the following scripture verse, which his family will remember him by:
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” - 2 Timothy 4:7-8
He is survived by his wife, Susan; his daughters, Sherry (Jack) Stanford and Julia Durango; his grandchildren, Natalie, Hillary, Chad, Kyle and Ryan; and his great-grandsons, Dallas, Bennett, and Theo.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Mary Frances Greider, and two beloved brothers-in-law, John Mack and Thomas Kerns.
Larry’s life will be celebrated at a private family gathering. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to First Baptist Church of Davenport or the charity of your choice.
