John Allen Scherer, 75, of Davenport, died Saturday, April 14, 2012 at his home. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at 11:00 am at The Runge Mortuary. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 to 8 pm at the mortuary.

John was born January 19, 1937 in Davenport; the son of Robert and Dorothy (Brown) Scherer. He served in the Army during the Korean War. After 29 years together, he married his longtime companion Mary M. Faranda on December 20, 1993 in Davenport.
He worked for several area home improvement companies including ACRI and Fanth Construction prior to going out on his own. He drove a stock car for 45 years and was an avid NASCAR fan. John enjoyed cookouts; especially cooking brats and spending time with family , especially his grandchildren and his beloved cats, Sammy and Patches He was known in his neighborhood as the “Can Man” and will be greatly missed.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Mary; sons: Todd, Sturgeon Bay, WI; Tim, Davenport; Tom, Oshkosh, WI; daughters: Susan Scherer, Apopka, FL and Robin Reynolds, Jacksonville, FL; stepchildren: Scott (Tammy) Blake, Davenport, IA; Kevin (Mary) McFadden, Ashdown, Ark; ; Brian (Debbie) Crosby, Viola, IL; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; brother, Harold, Davenport and a sister, Alice Morris, Jonesboro, LA. His parents and a brother, Ralph preceded him in death.
