Gary M. Shivers, 75, of Bettendorf, Iowa passed away on Tuesday, November 12, 2024 at the University of Iowa Hospital. Funeral service to honor his memory will be held on Monday, November 25, 2024 at 12:00 PM at Weerts Funeral Home; visitation will be before the service starting at 10:00 AM. Burial will be at the Rock Island National Cemetery following the service. Memorials in Gary’s name may be made to the American Red Cross.
Gary was born on September 22, 1949 to Wayne and Betty Shivers. Growing up on the family farm, one of Gary’s favorite pastimes was watching the crops change throughout the seasons. Following high school, Gary joined the United States Navy and served for six years. He graduated from Drake University with a Bachelor's degree in Social Work. Gary worked for the American Red Cross for 36 years as a social worker; he retired in 2011 as the Director of Emergency Services. Gary was united in marriage to Mary Reichelt on December 27, 2008. He was active in his community and was a member of the Kiwanis Club. Gary loved to travel across the United States and “camp” in his RV; every place he traveled he had to pick up a new baseball cap for his collection. He enjoyed spending time with his family playing cards and cribbage. Gary loved listening to music 24/7 and had an eclectic taste in music; he also enjoyed watching a good movie or TV series. He enjoyed ending the day with a glass of red wine.
Those left to honor Gary’s memory are his wife of 16 years Mary; children Becky (Todd) Metivier and Chris (Anna) Shivers; step-children Mindy (Melissa) Reichelt-Abell and Don (Amy) Reichelt and; grandchildren Aiden, Camryn, Henry, Callen, Gray, Avery, Finn, and Mia; siblings Ron (Bev) Shivers, , Cindy (Stan) Smelser, and Neal (Carol) Shivers; along with many beloved nieces and nephews.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents.
Gary’s light-heartedness and kind soul will be missed by his family and friends.
