It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved sister, Valerie on April 16, 2024, at the age of 73. Born in Halifax, she was the daughter of the late Donald and Mattie (McKay) Tingley.
Valerie had been unwell for some time and fought a long battle with lung disease before she passed away at her home in Drummond Hall, Parkland Clayton Park, surrounded by her family.
Despite the many challenges she faced, Val always maintained an optimistic attitude and a cheerful disposition. She attended Miss Murphy’s Business College, working for a short time at NS Light and Power before becoming the executive secretary of the Director of the Nova Scotia Commission on Drug Dependency, a position she was very proud to hold. She concluded her career in Oromocto, NB, retiring from an administrative role with the RCMP.
Family was very important to Valerie and she loved any opportunity to host get togethers, especially to play cards. She was always the first to offer to have the family Christmas party at her place, which was of course beautifully decorated because Christmas was her favourite holiday.
Val was a devoted mother to Jillian and grandmother to Breanna and Paige whom she adored. She loved to travel and cherished the many memorable vacations she was able to take the girls on, most recently a Disney cruise before she became too ill to travel.
She is survived by her daughter, Jillian Hopkins (Jaret Phillips), beloved granddaughters Breanna and Paige, stepchildren Robert and Jennifer Pitcairn, as well as her brothers Greg, Mark and Matt and her sisters Patricia and Kathleen Tingley along with many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Sgt. Barrie Pitcairn, her brothers Donnie and Kim, as well as her sister Susan Jones.
Valerie was very appreciative of the wonderful healthcare workers who took care of her throughout her life, but especially in the past year. These include the staff at Parkland Clayton Park, Dartmouth General Hospital, and the QE2 Hospital.
Visitation will take place on April 25, 2024 from 6:00pm- 8:00pm at Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland Street, Dartmouth.
