Born in Halifax, NS on April 25, 1947. Shirley grew up in Dartmouth on Lake Banook where she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, swimming, softball, badminton, her beloved dogs and reading.
After high school she attained her General Registered Medical Laboratory Technologist designation (R.T.) and worked in various hospitals throughout her career in both Halifax and Sydney.
Shirley happily married Edward (Ted) Austin on April 2nd 1971 at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Dartmouth NS, presided by Rev. Dr Hugh Farquhar with family and friends in attendance. Shirley and her husband enjoyed travelling, scuba diving, tennis and cottage life.
While taking time off to raise her two children, Pamela and Glenn, Shirley became an active community volunteer. She was a substitute child care worker, a librarian, a Sunday school teacher and a camp nurse. She also served on several committees in the community of Lr Sackville where she lived for 50 years with her husband raising their children. She also enjoyed spending time at her summer home on the South Shore walking local beaches and searching for sea glass.
Throughout her life Shirley was always involved in higher learning education in health, medicine and the arts. She was also an avid reader and a lover of animals. She had a great passion for gardening, baking, crafting, sewing and quilting...she was a wonderful homemaker.
She will be remembered as a kind and giving Mother who always made us feel loved.
She is preceded in death by her husband Edward (Ted) A. Austin, father Douglas C. Totten, mother Mildred J. Totten (Tattrie).
She will be dearly missed by her children Pamela Lynn Austin (Troy Benoit), Glenn Edward Allan Austin (Meghan Moody), along with her sister Carole Joyce (William Joyce), brother Terry Totten, brother in law Rev. Dr. Hugh Farquhar - nieces Katherine Joyce, Rose Farquhar Madden, Laura Bordage, Kathy Austin-Surette - nephews Billy Joyce, Graeme Farquhar, Glen Farquhar, Wayne Austin.
Cremation has taken place and a private family burial will occur at Mount Herman Cemetery.
