FISHER, Patricia Ruth Marlow Fisher (Hopkins) - 90, passed away peacefully in Halifax on August 31st. Born in Halifax in 1932, Ruth was the only child of the late Rose (Marlow) and Walter Hopkins of Dartmouth. She is survived by three of her children: David (Beverley), Bruce (Michelle) and Patricia (Ron); and, by five grandchildren (Wesley, Mitch, Warren, Marlow and Lila). She was predeceased by her husband Ernest; and her oldest son Brian (Bonnie).
Ruth grew up and lived in Dartmouth. She was a graduate of Dartmouth High School, the University of King’s College, and the Maritime School of Social Work. Early in her career she worked for the Department of Community Services in Halifax, Pictou and Cape Breton. Later, she worked part-time for the Nova Scotia Family and Child Welfare Association, the Kidney Foundation of Nova Scotia, and the Nova Scotia Association of Social Workers.
Ruth was very active in the life of her Church, serving on the parish council; as a Warden; a lay reader; singing in the church choir; and, volunteering in various church organizations. She was Diocesan President of the Mother’s Union.
Ruth was devoted to Ernest and her family. She first met Ernest in Grade Three. They were married in 1954 and together for 62 years. He kept the above photo, taken in her family home, in his flight suit during his time with the RCAF. In recent years she and Ernest traveled and explored frequently. Her greatest joy in life was always spending time with her family. She also loved reading and was constantly immersed in one or more novels. Ruth will be deeply missed by her family, friends and all those who loved her.
The service is Tuesday September 13th, 10am at Christ Church, Dundas Street, Dartmouth, NS. A reception will follow.
