Ryan, Gerald C., “Gerry”-82, of Dartmouth passed away November 18, 2012 at the Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Springhill, NS, he was the son of the late John and Mae (Maddison) Ryan. He was a graduate of Springhill High School and the Canadian Institute of Management (C.I.M), St. Mary’s University. He was employed with the Cumberland Railway and Coal Co. as a payroll clerk until 1958 and then moved to Moncton, NB where he accepted employment with the British American Oil Co. Ltd. During his career in the oil business he was employed with three oil companies, British American Oil Co., Ltd., Gulf Canada Ltd., and Ultramar Canada Inc., until his retirement in 1990. During his 32 years with the oil companies he lived in Moncton, Woodstock, Saint John, Fredericton, and Dartmouth, NS where he held various positions in marketing, including Area Manager, Industrial Consumer and Heating Depts., and Manager, Support Services. He was a former member of St. David’s Presbyterian Church, Springhill and an Elder at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Dartmouth for 25 years. He was a Representative Elder and participated in the activities of the Presbytery of Halifax-Lunenburg and the Synod of the Atlantic Provinces. He was a member of the Kilted Choir of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. He was also a member of the Northhumberland Golf and Country Club, Pugwash, NS and a member of the Hartlen Point Golf Club, Eastern Passage. He was a member of the Masonic Order, Eastern Star #51, Dartmouth and was a member of the Knights of Pythias, Springhill. Gerry is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, the former Norma Harris; beloved daughters, Jocelyn Ryan-Wiggin (David), Dartmouth, Valerie (Clary MacPherson), New Glasgow, and Andrea Ryan-Dow (Michael) Fall River; grandchildren, Emily, Patrick, Hilary, Keith, Luke and Jordan. He and his family spent many happy summers at their summer cottage in Pugwash. He also enjoyed many winters in Florida. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church at 2pm on Thursday November 22, Rev. Dr. P.A. Sandy McDonald officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Hillside Cemetery, Springhill, NS. Donations in Gerry’s memory may be made to a charity of choice or his home church.
