SMITH, Doreen Taught - 88 of Dartmouth, It is with broken hearts we announce that our mother, Doreen Taught Smith, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, at the Halifax Infirmary on May 5, 2016 following a brief illness. Born in McPhee’s Corner, NS, she was the daughter of the late Charlotte (Gorveatt) and Earl Ettinger. She spent her youth in Shubenacadie and following high school, she moved to Amherst, NS to complete her commercial course. There she met the love of her life, Guy Smith. In 1955, Doreen and Guy moved to Dartmouth where they raised their family. Doreen worked for many years at John D. MacRae Ltd. and until her retirement, at Diversey Canada. Doreen was an avid bridge player, played in singles and couples bridge clubs throughout her adult life and played up until only a few weeks ago. She enjoyed knitting and making afghans for each of her children and grandchildren. She loved to garden and took great pride in the flowers she grew at their summer trailer in Shediac. She loved to go camping and spent many summers enjoying friends and family at Ocean Surf Trailer Park in Shediac, NB. In her later years, she loved spending time at the cottage in Shediac, sitting on the front deck chatting with everyone who walked by. Doreen was a person of great faith and a longstanding member of Woodlawn United Church in Dartmouth. She joined the UCW and remained an active member of her Naomi Unit. Doreen could always be counted on to do her part, preparing for Church chowders, dinners and fairs. In 2012, she was honored with a Life Time Membership in the UCW. Devoted to her husband and family, Doreen created a home filled with love and happy times where everyone was welcome. She loved Christmas and made our family home a place of celebration. Considered the angel in our family, Doreen always kept in touch with her family and friends and if anyone needed to know family connections, birthdates, etc. they called Doreen. She was kind to everyone, always found the good in everyone, and was loved and respected by all. Doreen is survived by her children, Lynne (Don) Theriault, Dana (Cindy), grandchildren, Natalie (Blaine) Walker; Michael (Holly) McCarthy, Calgary; Jennifer (Robbie) Dykens, Jeffrey Theriault; great grandchildren Brendan, Madison and Matthew Walker; Andrew, Jacob and Levi McCarthy, Calgary; Ryan and Jessie Dykens; Nate and Levi Theriault; sister Marjorie (George) Mason and brother Buddy (Joyce) Ettinger, Kentville; many cousins, nieces and nephews.
